Avoid

This is my third attempt to post something about this book. Apparently our dear host here doesn't like me quoting from N himself. So let's try something else.
In the nutshell, this is a typical Germanic "wissenschaftliche" sort of thing book, by which I mean a large amount of insolently incoherent, ambiguous, and off-the-wall gibbering. Most of the text in this book defies comprehension. I give it one extra star (beyond the lowest rating) for admitting freely that N was probably more addle-pated than is common to admit, along with a few muddled but reasonable suggestions on exegesis of N's works (in the degree that something intelligible can be extracted from them).
Overall it's not something that anyonw should waste one's time reading. Just read N himself -- I've read all his books and has not so far discovered anything of great value in any books ABOUT him that I read, nothing that would either go beyond my own understanding, or making sense to begin with. Professors ("philosophasters") like his writings because of their abstruseness and incoherency, which enables any sort of profound-looking gratuitous hermeneutics to support their paid academic positions; books can be written, tenures obtained. But those are not our motivations as readers. All in all, what N says himself in one of the little poetic epigrams beginning his Gay Science ("Seneca") can serve as a perfect epigraph to this book. Avoid.
