An excellent read for those who wish to learn to come across as more then just a man. This book while a VERY dry read, is actually full of dos and don'ts fir those who wish to learn.

but this copy is a major disappointment.

This review is not of the book, but this corrupted reprint. This printing, and the corresponding lady's version are NOT the same as the original, as content has been omitted. My boyfriend and I got these books to learn some more traditional teachings on Christian conduct, and the Christian parts were largely omitted including an entire chapter (Chapter X "Conduct in Church"). The 5 star rating is for the original, but this copy is a major disappointment.

For both students and professionals, this book presents the science behind the operation of refrigeration systems as a method for building solid analytical skills, which will set the student/technician apart when it comes to understanding and troubleshooting system malfunctions, inefficiencies, and service requirements.

Principles of Refrigeration has been one of the foundation textbooks in the refrigeration field since Roy Dossat wrote the first edition in 1961. Through four additional editions, Mr. Dossat presented the fundamentals of refrigeration theory, components and systems to students who were preparing to enter an occupation rich with opportunities. I am honored that Mr. Dossat selected me to carry on his tradition of excellence by awarding me the opportunity to write the fifth edition of his textbook.

Having taught HVAC/R students at Ferris State University I have discovered the strengths and weaknesses that students have in developing the study habits and analytical skills they need to prepare themselves as successful technicians, technologists and engineers. I know from personal experience that if students graduate without the ability to build upon their educational experience, they will be limited in their advancement and opportunities. If an instructor can teach students how processes can be broken down into the fundamental principles, they will be able to correctly analyze and troubleshoot systems and processes that were not presented in a book or classroom activities. I have used this information, along with feedback from many faculty and graduates who used the previous editions of this book, as the basis for writing the fifth edition. The following paragraphs outline some of the significant changes in the text.

• This book is intended for students of two- and four-year refrigeration programs who have previously completed a fundamental course in refrigeration systems. Although such a course is not a prerequisite, this edition was written to advance the student's knowledge of refrigeration systems by presenting more detailed information about the refrigeration cycle, component design and system operation than is normally found in an introductory text. The book presents the science behind the operation of systems as a method of building solid analytical skills that will raise the student above his or her peers when it comes to determining the cause of system malfunctions and inefficiencies and to selecting the best component to modify a system or replace a failed part.
• The first eleven chapters of the book have been significantly enhanced. The thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanics and physics topics have been expanded. Rather than a review, these topics are now thoroughly explained in a manner that allows a student to comprehend the sciences related to refrigeration processes. The information develops the foundation needed to understand the underlying theory of refrigeration component and system operation. This part of the book may be a comprehensive review for students in programs where these subjects are taught as separate courses, but it is also an excellent presentation for those who use this book as the primary resource for this information.
• All of the information presented in Parts 1 through 3 is used throughout the remainder of the text to explain how refrigeration components function. There is no esoteric or "nice-to-know" information presented in this section, so classroom time can be used more efficiently. The refrigeration cycles show how changes in system variables are transferred through the system. This information develops the reader's analytical skills.
• The book presents the formulas, units and proofs that support the information presented in the chapters in Parts 2, 3 and 4. The mathematical material is intended to be a resource in developing the relationships that exist in the processes rather than as a mathematical exercise. These relationships will be applied throughout the remainder of the text; the formulas will not. The chapters can be just as effective in training a technician without the associated formulas, but they are there to show from whence the information presented in the chapter was derived. In support of this presentation method, all of the mathematics related to the chapter material is presented in the last section of the chapter labeled "Optional Analysis." This section can be skipped or assigned as extra credit material.
• The formulas are presented in Inch-Pound and System International units. All variables are written with the appropriate units to show students how to properly approach problems by applying the fundamental relationships. This reduces the memorization of formulas and increases the understanding of the interrelationships between the sciences. The use of SI units also exposes students to the associated methods of measuring variables, so they become familiar with the information found on product literature and equipment nameplates. The formulas and examples are used to show relationships without making the book appear to be a engineering text.
• Most of the topics in the 4th edition remain in this edition, although they have been reorganized to improve the flow of information. The entire book was rewritten using a style that is more closely related with books, manuals and other material read by today's students.
• Some of the chapters that appeared too long have been split into two smaller chapters, so they are easier for the instructor to build lectures around and less intimidating to students. Each chapter also includes true-and-false questions along with multiple-choice questions to highlight the important information presented in the chapter.

Through these and other changes, I have taken a very important, comprehensive and effective resource and made it easier for both student and instructor to use and comprehend the information. Through the use of smaller sentences, fewer assumptions, more explanation and a logical presentation format, I believe I have succeeded in developing a new edition of the book that honors Mr. Dossat's intent to help those who have chosen the refrigeration field for their career. This edition will be more appealing to faculty who currently use the book and more inviting to those who are looking for a comprehensive textbook for their students.

In depth basics to complicated analysis of refrigation cycle

In understanding the refrigeration cycle, Roy Dossat had 25 years in the field before teaching at the University of Houston. I was fortunate to attend the course taught by him in the 70's. It showed the man had much to offer even to the less experienced technician who needed to start on the basics. This book is easy to understand and a nice read for those who need answers to the complicated use of refrigerant and applications that drive the business. Refrigerant application is in constant change as environmental demands alter our lives. This book is a fundamental foundation and should be on the reference shelf of all engineers and technicians that want a straight foward understanding of the refrigeration cycle. debien@flash.net

Excellent book

This book bridges the gap between theory and practical applications without getting bogged down in heavy calculations. It explains the principles of refrigeration and how they are practically applied. I have found it very easy to read. The author obviously has excellent knowledge and experience in this field and he conveys it well. The information structure of the book suits my way of thinking. When his four-year-old sister Maggie tells him she saw a pig in a top hat outside, he scoffs…but sure enough, when he follows his remote-controlled helicopter into his neighbor's yard, he meets Chives, the talking pig who acts as a butler to the "mean and crazy" elderly lady who lives there. He decides to investigate with his new friend, Luna Lopez, and before long they are hearing a truly incredible tale from Viola Dots, whose 13-year-old son David disappeared into a magical frame 50 years ago. Tiger almost immediately figures out the frame's particular magic—involving an "Hour of Power" and whatever painting resides in the frame at that time—and he and Luna are sucked into a copy of Henri Rousseau's Surprised! where they meet David himself, still a teenager. They narrowly escape the painting's tiger and return to Viola's house, promising to return at another time to try to rescue her son and effectively setting up future installments. Cartoonish drawings—in full color when the duo is inside the painting, black-and-white when they are not—are plentiful, and an afterword introduces readers to the painting and the artist. About the Author
Lin Oliver is the New York Times best-selling author of more than thirty books for young readers. She is also a film and television producer, having created shows for Nickelodeon, PBS, Disney Channel, and Fox. The cofounder and executive director of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, she loves to hang out with children's book creators. Lin lives in Los Angeles, in the shadow of the Hollywood sign, but when she travels, she visits the great paintings of the world and imagines what it would be like to be inside the painting—so you might say she carries her own Fantastic Frame with her!

Samantha Kallis is a Los Angeles-based illustrator and visual development artist. CHAPTER ONE
 
“I saw a giant orange pig on our swing set this morning,” said my little sister, Maggie. “He was wearing a fancy black hat.”
 
We were eating tuna melts at the kitchen table in our new house.
 
“Of course he was,” I said. “And I bet he was playing ‘Jingle Bells’ on the tuba.”
 
“Everyone knows pigs don’t play the tuba,” Maggie snapped, sticking her tongue out at me.
 
I decided not to continue this conversation. Four-year-olds say weird things, and there’s no point trying to talk sense into them. The other day, it took me an hour to convince Maggie that bananas don’t dance. But our mom, being our mom, felt the little bubble brain deserved a serious answer.
 
“It would be very unusual to see an orange pig on our swing set, honey,” my mom said, wiping a long string of gooey cheese off Maggie’s chin.
 
“At least one with a fancy hat,” my dad added.
 
Maggie slammed her sandwich down on her plate. She can have a bad temper when she wants to.
 
“I saw him.” She pouted. “He also had on a white shirt buttoned all the way up his blobby pig neck and a red bow tie with polka dots.”
 
“This is ridiculous,” I told her. “There’s no way a pig could tie a tie. I don’t even know how to do it, and I’m a ten-year-old human. You’re just making up this whole story to get attention.”
 
“Tiger Brooks!” My mom frowned at me. “Don’t be so harsh with your sister, young man. She just has a very active imagination. Now clear the table, please.”
 
Wait a minute! Maggie talks like a crazy person and I get in trouble?
 
Who made that rule?
 
At least clearing the table got me out of doing the Saturday deliveries with my mom. She had twenty cakes to deliver that afternoon. Her business is called Cakes by Cookie, which sounds stupid until you realize that her name is Cookie. She bakes fancy cakes, mostly for little kids’ birthday parties. She’s been doing really well, which is how our family got the extra money to move into a bigger place from our small apartment in our old neighborhood. I had no interest in spending my first Saturday in our new house dropping off Elmo cakes.
 
Lucky for me, Maggie wanted to go with Mom. Dad announced that he was going to take a nap, so I did the dishes and cleaned up. Afterward, I checked my new Batman watch, the one my uncle Cole gave me when I told him I couldn’t tell time the old-fashioned way. It took me a while to learn, but now I could read the hands. It was only three o’clock. That left me the rest of the afternoon to set up my lab, with no four-year-olds telling me their imaginary pig stories.
 
My lab is what other people would call my bedroom. I like to call it a lab because it’s where science takes place. Science Tiger Brooks–style, that is. I take things apart to see how they work: clocks, radios, old tricycles, robots, windup dinosaurs—whatever I can find. Then I try to put them back together. Sometimes I do it right. But mostly, I make weird things like a toaster with wheels, or a dinosaur that ticks, or a kitchen chair that roars.
 
I had a lot of unpacking to do. The first box, which was labeled “HANDS OFF AND THAT MEANS YOU, MAGGIE” was filled with nuts, bolts, cogs, gears, and screws. The next carton had about a million remote controls I had collected that had gotten separated from their machines.
 
As I picked up that box, one of the remotes fell out and got jammed between my bed and the wall. Suddenly, I heard a whirring sound. Looking around, I saw that my radio-controlled helicopter had taken off. It circled my room and sailed out the window into the backyard.
 
I grabbed the remote and ran into the living room. My dad was on the couch, snoring like a grizzly bear. I dashed past him into the backyard, just in time to see my helicopter cruise by the swing set and disappear over the neighbor’s fence.
 
“Hey, get back here!” I called out. I tried using the controller, but the helicopter was out of range.
 
As I ran toward the fence, I noticed a weird pattern in the grass under the swing set. It looked like footprints, except they weren’t human footprints. Each print was divided into two sections and was pointed at the top. Could they be hoofprints? They didn’t look like horse hoofprints.
 
Wait a minute! Pigs have hooves.
 
Stop it, Tiger, I said to myself. You are not four years old. You do not see imaginary pigs. Just find your helicopter and go back into the lab.
 
I dragged one of the lawn chairs over to the fence. I hopped up and looked into the neighbor’s yard.
 
The grass in the yard was as tall as Maggie. No one had mowed it in years. There was a barbecue covered with rust and spiderwebs. A long clothesline with sheets hanging on it stretched across the whole yard. The sheets were splattered with paint—big splotches of red and purple and yellow and orange. Behind one of those sheets, I could just make out—no, even I didn’t believe it!
 
I stared hard and long. Then I had to believe it. My eyes don’t lie. It was a black top hat poking out from behind the sheets.
 
“I see you,” I said to the hat.
 
There was no answer.
 
“Whoever you are, if you have my helicopter, give it back.”
 
Something moved behind the sheets. I looked down and saw hooves attached to what looked like puffy orange legs!
 
Suddenly, a strong breeze came up and blew the sheet off the line. Standing in front of me was a large orange pig wearing a black top hat, a white shirt, and a red polka-dot bow tie. He was holding my helicopter.
 
“It’s you,” I whispered. “The one Maggie saw.”
 
A woman’s voice, old and shrill, came from inside the house.
 
“Chives,” the voice called. “Come in here right now. I need more blue!”
 
The pig gave me what I think was a smile and tipped his top hat.
 
“I’m very pleased to meet you, good sir,” he said.
 
I was so shocked, I couldn’t move. I just stared at him with my mouth hanging open.
 
“Chives!” the woman called again. “Right now!”
 
“If you’ll excuse me, Madame is calling,” he said.
 
Clutching my helicopter, the pig hurried through the back door of the house. I stood there, still as a statue.
 
Then I felt a cold, sticky hand on my shoulder. I spun around so fast, I fell off the lawn chair and landed facedown on the grass. I was afraid to look up, afraid of what I might see. The ice-cold hand of a ghost? A zombie with no face? If a talking orange pig lived next door, maybe something even weirder was lurking in my own backyard.

Fun and Unique!

I love this fast-paced, exciting book, and I've seen many young readers enjoy it too. The concept is unique and it gets kids genuinely interested in art history. With just the right amount of action, humor, and character development, I'd recommend this to everyone!

An exciting adventure for early chapter book readers

Summary: Tiger’s exploring his new neighborhood when he sees an orange pig in a hat and tie. Pursuing this unusual neighbor, he meets a girl named Luna, and the two of them trace Chives the Pig to an old haunted-looking house. Boldly making their way inside, they meet ancient Viola Dots, who hasn’t left her house in 50 years, ever since her son David disappeared into a picture frame, and Chives popped out in his place. Upon close examination of the frame, Tiger discovers a clock, which he sets back an hour. Almost immediately, the picture opens up, and he and Luna are sucked inside. There they meet David, who is still 13, and have to outrun a hungry tiger. They manage to find their way back, but David is left behind once again, leaving the reader ready for book #2, Splat! Another Messy Sunday, now available at a library or bookstore near you. Back matter includes information about the painting the kids go into, Surprised! By Henri Rousseau. 128 pages; grades 2-4.

Pros: A reasonably exciting adventure for early chapter book readers, with lots of illustrations, black and white for the times outside of the picture and color inside of it.

Cons: Viola Dots seems unusually spry for someone who must be closing in on 90 at the least.

Art history not for art lovers

Just a brief word on this volume, which reflects the characteristics of the series.

This book approaches its topic in a sort of post-historical fashion. It attempts to go beyond all the traditional things one might say about the Greek tradition, with the result that, in the end, it says fairly little about the art itself. If you are looking for a discussion of how mimetic and ideal emphases can actually be seen in the style and techniques of the art, you may be disappointed.

I have gradually come to the conclusion that this series of books on art really don't have that much to say about paintings, sculptures, friezes, and what we can see in them.

Bryan Lee O'Malley's first major work

I came to Bryan Lee O'Malley's Lost at Sea after reading his two other books (Volumes One & Two of the Scott Pilgrim series) and thus, am of two minds about Lost at Sea. This is a very different book in both tone and humour than Scott Pilgrim. It's more somber, the art and feel are less stylized, the main character is prone to multiple page internal monologues about her feelings. In light of the Scott Pilgrim series it is easy to see that Lost at Sea came first. It is obviously an early work.

This does not make it bad.

Lost at Sea is about a girl (Raleigh) whose soul may or may not have been stolen by a cat, going home to her mother with friends that she doesn't even know. It is a story about self-discovery, about finding both yourself and the rest of the world all at the same time. At times heartbreakingly earnest, at times lightly comic it is a 160 page exercise in raw emotion. It would be wrong to dismiss Lost at Sea as cliched, to look at it's basic premise (girl finds herself and her friends on road trip home) and make assumptions about what it has to say and, more importantly, how it says it. O'Malley is an excellent writer, and he handles the obvious moments in Lost at Sea without a wink or nudge, he doesn't make these characters a joke to the reader, he honestly portrays their feelings in the way that they feel them. And that is the best part about Lost at Sea, when you're 18 and lost you think you're the only one and O'Malley write Raleigh as though she is.

Just Buy the Black and White Version Instead

Don't get me wrong, I love this book; it is inspiring, clever, and tells a unique story. Due to the rereleases of the Scott Pilgrim series, I expected this book to be in full color as well, which is why I purchased it. Yet the entire book is in blue or red shades rather than bright and vivid colors like the Scott Pilgrim hardcovers.The hardcover is nice and the back contains additional content, but believe me, if you already own the paperback, black and white version of this book, don't bother. Yet if you want to check this book out because you never read it, and the price difference is only a few bucks, go ahead, but it's not a big difference.
