A hopeful book about the Holocaust is a rare find. Billionaire financier George Soros, the author's son, is known for his optimistic, bold philanthropical support of open societies in post-Communist Eastern Europe. For European Jews, surviving the plague of Nazism that swept the continent in the first half of the 20th century became a test of resourcefulness, ingenuity, and sometimes just plain chutzpah. When the fascists took over Hungary in 1944, Soros was a Jewish lawyer with a family and friends. Under his strong guidance, his family voluntarily ceased to exist as Jews. Forging new identity papers, they adopted the guise of Christians and dispersed themselves throughout Budapest and beyond, dropping out of sight by blending into the background. With humor and wisdom, Soros tells the story of how he and his family managed to live relatively normal lives during the 11 months of fascist occupation, even while many around them were arrested and killed. This is an intelligently written narrative that is both compelling and uncomfortable, an autobiographical account that is like Anne Frank's diary but less poignant and more optimistic: the Soros family did, after all, survive. When the Germans invaded Hungary in March 1944, Soros, a Jewish lawyer in Budapest, acquired fake identities for himself, his wife, their two sons, and his mother-in-law, and he got an architect to renovate a building in which the family could hide. The Russians liberated them in January 1945. This book is the story of how the family survived these 10 months in which more than half of Hungary's Jews perished. Soros was able to find forgers who created false documents--labor permits, military papers, identification cards with photographs, and ration cards--for his family and many of his friends. He later made arrangements to lodge his family and friends in other locations in the city and beyond. While relating his personal experiences, Soros chronicles the fate of less-fortunate Jews living in the ghetto, tormented by overcrowding, filth, and hunger, presenting a graphic account of the life and survival in Nazi-occupied Budapest and a remarkable portrait of this most resourceful man. Masquerade: The Incredible True Story of How George Soro's Father Outsmarted the Gestapo: Purchased at Amazon.com

Masquerade is the true story of how Tivadar Soros, a Jewish lawyer from Budapest obtained false identities for himself, his wife, mother-in-law, and his two sons. They used these false papers from about April of 1944 until early 1945. I was very surprised at this book, it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. Actually, I thought the book was fantastic. The way the author thought about his and his families survival was just about the opposite of much I have read in surviving the Holocaust. His main idea was not going with the crowd, but to blend in with the crowd. Being a lawyer, the author also had some very good ideas on how to obtain false identities, how police routine would work, he had good contacts, and so on. I think it also helped because the author seemed like a bit of an actor, as many lawyers seem to be. Not a bad thing to be in surviving a world turned completely upside down. One of the things I liked the most, was that the book was written with a real sense of humor. I very much enjoyed reading a book with a very different way of looking at things, which is why I gave it five stars.

A guidebook for tough times from a moral survivor

It's WWII, the Nazis have invaded Hungary, and Hungarian Jewish attorney Tivadar Soros has to somehow keep his wife and sons (including future billionaire George) safe. While others cling to bygone comforts, status, rules and norms that will betray them, Soros understands that the former order is gone and he must stay nimble and alert to keep his loved ones away from firing squads and out of the death camps.

The style is simple, straightforward, and intimate. You get the feeling of a man thinking on his feet in the middle of danger--finding solutions and then abruptly having to abort them and find something new. Even better, you hear the morals and principals that Tivadar relied on to get through the danger.

I liked this book a lot. It's a good read and I think of Tivadar's guidelines in my own tough decisions in life.

A family's survival against the odds

I still wonder whether I would have survived, for how long and under what circumstances, had I been in the position of this family and so many others during the Nazi era. I very much doubt I would have possessed the courage of this or any other family or person. But, as the book indicates, people rise to extraordinary levels when family protection and even survival is at stake. Of course, being a lawyer with substantial financial support (if you can hold on to it) plays an important role in this family's survival, but should in no way negate the extraordinary courage and skills were used to save them from what might have seemed the inevitable fate of so many.

About the Author

Alain Picard earned a BA in illustration from Western CT State University and went on to study at the Art Student's League in New York City. Picard sites Sargent, Degas, and Sorolla among his artistic influences. A love of light and beauty are immediately apparent in his pastel and oil paintings. Alain's work has been featured in such publication as as The Artist's Magazine and The Pastel Journal. He has garnered top awards throughout the Northeast in esteemed exhibitions including the Portrait Society of America, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, the Connecticut Pastel Society, and the Pastel Society of America. Alain is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America as well as the Connecticut Pastel Society, where he previously served as President. In 2004 The Artist's Magazine highlighted Alain as one of 20 contemporary artists "On the Rise." He later won the Best Portfolio Award at the 2009 Portrait Society of America Conference in Washington, D.C. A frequent workshop instructor and demonstrator for art associations, schools, galleries, and museums, Alain was recently invited to demonstrate a portrait in pastel at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Very Good with Pastel Basics

Beautiful cover. I gave this only 4 stars because I wish Alain Picard had done a larger book with much more content. He is a great artist.
However, if you are wanting to give soft pastels a try, for the cost, this is a very good start and the instruction is coming from an artist whose knowledge of pastels is huge. He has won award after award.
You will learn.
It is informative and does get into tools and materials, getting started, the basics and techniques of pastels...depth and form, even painting a portrait. Yes, there is some excellent instruction inside.
But, nothing you would not find in a larger instructional pastel book .
I still would recommend this book because it is a very helpful book in the introduction of pastels for a very low price.
Every page in this only 32 page soft covered (Walter Foster) book teaches.

A fine novel

Offering a rare glimpse of Pakistan not long after partition, this tightly plotted work remains one of Zulfikar Ghose's most well known novels.
The story involves the wealthy and powerful Shah brothers who conspire to destroy a land holder named Aziz Khan who has refused to sell his property to them. The novel works on many levels, but certainly it is the story of a culture in transition, a new way eclipsing an old way. Resplendent with striking images of Pakistan, the sociological matter is rich: modernization clashes with tradition, economic progress and industrialism obliterate time-honored values. The Shah brothers represent the new order, avaricious, devoid of scruples, shrewd manipulators of the economic process. On the other hand, Aziz Khan symbolizes the tradition, the land, and the stolid character at the heart of the old culture. Ghose writes: "And these seventy acres, this piece of earth, this world of Aziz Khan, did not appear to him as land, as a property with a market value. It was a sufficiency of existence. So that nobody could take the land away from him without first taking away his existence."
Interestingly, it is the youngest Shah brother, Afaq, whose seemingly random act of violence against a teenage peasant girl sets the story into motion. Afaq remains one of the most interesting figures in the novel. Like the bedtime story he tells in the opening chapters, he is the monkey who is always running away from disaster. Indeed, this image foreshadows Afaq's actions for the rest of the novel.
One of the truly exceptional qualities of this book is the author's style. Ghose maintains a straightforward narrative in this novel, but in some passages, the philosophical questions seem beyond the intellectual range of the characters and this situation gives the author's style some of its unique qualities. Aziz Khan's story is tragic because though he is a master of his land, he is not a master of language. Ghose writes the following:
Now a monument himself though no one had come to look; an inscription in a dead language; a hieroglyph the new literacy did not care to interpret. . . . Had his tongue been as competent as his hands. . . .
Yet beyond the specific circumstances of a land holder in the Punjab, Ghose grapples with larger issues of language and meaning. Often interweaving subtle and complex insights about the philosophical problems of language into his storytelling, Ghose frequently makes the novel's conventions, that is to say, its form, serve the needs of his style.
In The Murder of Aziz Khan one of the key themes has to do with the human consciousness and its relationship to the past, the present, and the future. Memory serves to order experience and this order is what we call Time. Yet objects have a way of defying human ordering. In this novel, objects take on a kind of menace. Like massive boulders creating rapids and whirlpools in the river of Time, places and landscapes refuse to be ordered and in fact, distort, divide, and disrupt our perception of the flow of things giving the novel a resonance and depth that is not often found in Fiction.

good story but very depressing, for a book about life in Pakistan shortly after it was founded the book is great, but the story is so depressing, O.K. to read but recommend have a happier story to read afterwards or you will feel down for days.

Before retiring from the lecture circuit in 2008, Jim Trelease spent thirty years addressing parents, teachers, and librarians on the subjects of children, literature, and the challenges of multimedia to print. Inspiring and helpful

You already believe in reading aloud and feel comfortable enough doing it... so do you really need a Read Aloud Handbook? You probably don't NEED it, but I think you'll be grateful to have this book. As both a parent of young children and as a teacher of low-income middle school students (on a break to stay at home while my kids are young), I'm getting so much from it.

The biggest lure for me was the Handbook's "Treasury" - the annotated list of great read-aloud books that makes up the last third of the Handbook. I get overwhelmed when selecting books and wanted to be able to choose from a list of reliably loveable books for my children, as well as to make sure I wasn't missing any especially good choices for my middle school students. I'm pleased with the Treasury so far, both in the quality of books described and in the range of ages represented (There are a great few pages on reading to infants in Ch. 3 and any age toddler-8th grade should find several great recommendations in the Treasury). The bulk of the books described are picture books, short novels, and longer novels (100 pages and up), but there are some recommendations for poetry and reference books as well.

The first 170 pages of the Handbook covers topics like why we should be reading aloud, suggestions for reading aloud at each stage of development from infant up, tips for Sustained Silent Reading, and good and bad news about the growing dependence on digital reading. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed these chapters. Here's what I loved:
* Inspiring: Trelease gives more than a sales-pitch for reading aloud - he makes the love and joy of reading with children contagious. I was already "sold" on reading aloud, but feel re-energized to make read-alouds more frequent and more fun.
* Challenging: The many anecdotes of inspiring educators and parents made me think. A teacher of 3 and 4 year olds reads chapter books as well as picture books... am I right to have assumed my 3 year old can't handle hearing a chapter book yet? And a mother read to her young child at meals as long a duration as the child showed interest... where can I work in more fun reading to our days? I could go on.
* Filled with practical suggestions: Some examples: great specific book recommendations when transitioning from picture books to novels, an anecdote of a clever ipod/text program for struggling readers, what we can learn from Oprah, and of course many practical dos and don'ts while reading aloud (before, during, and after reading). Several seem common sense, but they're still helpful.
* Readable: This reads like a conversation with a knowledgeable veteran educator who has formed strong opinions after years of getting to know how kids learn. It's filled with research, but not at all dense.

I'd also recommend Pam Allyn's What to Read When. There's not too much overlap; its book recommendations are more about teaching or opening up conversations on many different topics while the suggestions in Trelease's book are more about learning to love to read. Both are helpful to me.

The best book I've read on creating readers....

One and a half years ago, my kindergartener was reading at a 3rd grade level but lacked "comprehension". While he could retell basic plot elements, he appeared to lack any ability to synthesize or think about what he had read.

So I dutifully bought several comprehension workbooks and was preparing to work with him all summer. Then I stumbled across Trelease's wonderful handbook, and the light went on. What a compelling message about the importance of reading aloud to kids! What a wonderful book list! And what a beautifully simple way to transform my son into a truly comprehending reader!

All I needed to do was read to my son abundantly, ENCOURAGE discussion, rejoice and respond if he spontaneously asked questions while I was reading (THAT was a paradigm shift), and surround him with great books. I could toss out the workbooks.

My son's reading comprehension greatly improved, my children LOVE our read-aloud times - as do I - and they love to read themselves. What's not to like? This book is a wonderful resource that I have referred to repeatedly.

Fantastic update

I am devoted follower of the Read-Aloud Handbook, and I thought for sure Jim Trelease was officially retired, so imagine my delight when this seventh edition appeared on Amazon! To make things even better, there is tremendous amount of new material in this edition. I have read the sixth edition front to back multiple times (I even did a blog series reviewing it chapter by chapter), and I have a copy of the first edition that I found at the used bookstore, but now I think I might have to invest in copies of editions 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well! Trelease really does replace at least 40 percent of the content and significantly revise the book list. This is definitely worth ordering if you already have a previous edition.

About the Author
David H. Hackworth (Col., U.S. Army, Ret.) spent almost five years of combat duty in Vietnam, as well as twenty-five years in the service of our nation's defense. His previous two nonfiction books, About Face (available from Touchstone) and Hazardous Duty, and his novel, The Price of Honor,The Price of Honor, were national bestsellers. Eilhys England produces feature films and writes with her partner and husband, David Hackworth. They live in Connecticut and Australia.

Vietnam - a defining point of his life

[Sadly for all of us, Col David Hackworth died shortly after I wrote this review. Nothing about him or my review of his works needs revision. Hack - we will miss you! Hack - RIP, Mike H, LTC, MI, USA 1970-1996].

Say what you want about Hackworth - you can't deny him his valor or experiences in the Army. "Hack" continues to thrive on controversy - one who is not afraid to stir the pot. This book was his first view on the public stage after his Vietnam exit from the Army.

As a young officer - I first read this book in the career stage of my commission - as a Major - and came away with mixed feelings about his views and attitudes. Hackworth's Vietnam experience - like that of John Kerry's, was a defining point of his life. Both came away from that service determined to change the way government uses the military. Kerry became an anti-military cynic; Hackworth lashed out at the systems' waste and stupidity - in an attempt to make the system better.

During war, Hack would be a leader one would wish to serve under. In peacetime - like so many other warriors - he'd be a disaster in the mindless training environment of a peacetime army. Like a fire extinguisher - keep under glass until an emergency demands his use.

The book is deliberately written to stir controversy. This IS Hackworth and what he is all about. Step on a few important toes to save good soldiers - this IS and always was his intent. When he drifts to politics - watch out! He has no friends in either political party.

If you have never served - and are thinking of signing up - maybe this will give you pause. If the world awaits you as a grand adventure - do what he did - and wear the uniform proudly for a majority of your adult life. At the least - Hackworth made me stop and think along the way. My latter years in uniform were constant battles against mind numbing stupidity and for care and protection of our countries' most valuable assets - the men and women who served under my leadership. I have learned much from this soldier. Buy and read the book. You will come away a changed person.

A born warrior

A juvenile delinquent, Hackworth, flees from his confinement and joins the Merchant Marine. Later, he pays off a wino to sign a fraudulent affidavit, as Hackworth's "father" (he was an orphan), that allows him to enter the Army at the age of fifteen. This is the beginning of this book, which ends with this man, now a Colonel, venting condemnation of America's tactics in Vietnam in the press, and his subsequent persecution by Army investigators, in a harrowing, white-knuckle ending.
A man is lucky to find his calling, and Hackworth was born to be a warrior. In a way, this book is an inspiration. It makes one want to be as good in one's profession as Hackworth was in his. And no matter what one's occupation is, one can identify with Hackworth's frustration with and anger at the "perfumed princes" who rose to the top in the Army he knew, and whos' equivalents exist in every field of endeavor. Don't you know people who don't give a grape-skin about the higher goals of their profession, and who live only to feed their ambition? Reading this book is like sitting down and listening to somebody who knows the score.

Inspiring and Educational, yet Worrying

Two main themes came out of "About Face" for me. The first is that it is an excellent "how-to" manual on practical leadership in the military. All of the lessons pounded into me as an Officer Cadet are shown here. Know you soldiers, care for them, lead by example, don't get them to do what you wouldn't..., the list goes on. In my opinion, this book, or at least large parts of it, should be required reading in every Officer training establishment that seeks to produce real commanders. As I read it, lights came on in my head as I began to understand some of the points I had missed in my training as a cadet. I believe it has been of some benefit to my performance as an Army Officer. For any cadets or junior officers out there, read this book.
The second theme is the way in which he describes an Army sinking into the morass so common of militaries in peacetime. The most worrying thing for me was the parallels I could see happening in my own Army. An easing of standards in recruitment and basic training, decisions being made based on politics and finance, rather than on realities, increasing bureaucratisation and micromanagement, etc, etc, etc. Things seem to be the same all over. Unfortunately, neither Col Hackworth nor I can give any easy answers.
Overall, an excellent book,that should provoke a few thoughts.
