Amazing artbook. Highly recommended.

[[VIDEOID:mo36HZJD41N76QG]]The Art of Wolfenstein: The New Order is definitely one of top artbooks for 2014, and it's one amazing video game artbook. I was caught by surprised at how good it is.

My copy of the book came with its own cardboard packaging. Usually books come shrink-wrapped or not wrapped at all. Publisher Dark Horse certainly does not want the book to be damaged during shipment.

By the way, there are 208 pages instead of 184 that are listed on some websites, even on Dark Horse's website. Nice little bonus.

This is an oversized artbook with a thick cover and pages. Good binding too.

Inside the concept art are split into 16 levels. For each level, we are shown the characters, environments, props, weapons, robots, vehicles and enemies. They are revealed in order just as in the game.

The art is incredible to look at. It's quite astonishing the amount of detail they put into the concept art. The resolution and definition on the characters are down to the pores. What you'll notice is this level of meticulous detail is applied throughout the book.

Robot designs are fantastic. For the 3D models, I can't even see or feel the polygonal look. These machines looks like very high polygon count models. In short, they look great. There are a lot of robots, mechanical vehicles, props, and quite a few metal hounds. The designs feel as if they have weight, and you won't want to stand in the way of any of the robots.

The environment artworks are beautiful. The artists really nailed the lighting and mood. Many are painted, and I think many are painted over 3D models, but you would feel that it's painted with lots of details rather than that it's modelled in 3D.

In addition to art of the actual assets in the game, there are pre-development concept art, basically artworks that are used to pitch the vision of the world and game play.

The commentary talks briefly about the designs and character profiles.

This is a amazing artbook. One of my favourites for 2014.

Very nice art book.

It's not often that Video Game Art is presented in such a way that the game gets its own art book. This hot new game has some of the most gorgeous art I've seen in a game, and this book presents it so well that you should buy it just for amazing artwork done for the game. This is the first time I've bought an art book for a video game, and I was not disappointed. I was instantly satisfied that I got to get a look at all the cool art done for this game, and it's just so well done.

Best Artbook Ever.

This is not only an excellent art book, it is also special because it covers one of the most unique shooters to ever be made. Wolfenstein New Oder is set in mostly 1960 in a world where the Nazis won World War 2. This gives the world an entirely different look and makes it its own little world for us to explore. The art book does an amazing job showing off prototype and final art, and also gives us a look at some unused pieces. No game deserves an art book more than Wolfenstein New Order, and this one is excellent.

How to Be a Good Wife by Emma Chapman. Marta seems dazed and confused about her place now. She tries to take up time, and becomes very observant of other people. She emphasizes and repeats in her head what she was taught about being a good wife. Right and wrong. A woman's place. She should be taking her meds. Her son's visit home sparks a rush of adrenaline. She starts seeing and hearing things. We should never doubt our memory or our imagination. Other people may try to impact and interfere. This book is an excellent perspective from the fragile mind. When the mind plays tricks it leaves people vulnerable. Just when she thinks she has it all figured out, it's all wrong. I really enjoyed the twist in this book. Great catch for the reader. I give it four stars.

Some will Compare Pomeroy's work, Naked in the Road to Henry David Thoreau's Walden. But Pomeroy does Thoreau one better, he teaches while allowing the reader to truly enjoy the journey. Naked in the Road is part philosophy, travel guide, and adventure. The narrator, some would call him a thinly disguised Pomeroy, decides one day to leave his life of materialism and ease in order to find out what is truly necessary in life. He takes nothing with him, not even a name. It is easy to get lost in this book and you will find yourself wondering if you could find shelter, food, clothing, and a new life, if you had nothing to guide you but your wits. You will find yourself caring about this strange nameless man and you will find yourself learning from his philosophy. Follow the narrator as he reasons about necessity and distinguishes want from need. There is much original and truly inspired thought during this journey. Pomeroy shares his far-reaching search for the true meaning of life, and allows us to share in his search for the true self.

Pomeroy writes a compelling story that teaches us to live our lives in a more thoughtful way. Question what you have been taught, experience life through your own eyes, don't follow the unwashed masses-think for yourself. These are just a few of the lessons that Naked in the Road can teach us. If each one of us took this journey, we too could discover what is truly necessary in our own lives and we might just be able to discover the source of true contentment.

What a journey Pomeroy can portray. Mixing both survival adventure with introverted prose Naked in the Road teases with the question of why the narrator would cast off cultural norms, including dominant society, to determine what is necessary for existence. More importantly, the author forces the reader to evaluate all that being human represents; what is needed and what has been lost through the quest for the easy life. Pomeroy examines the common dismissal the average First World citizen has of the exhaustible wealth of the world; constantly questioning what resources used, labour toiled, and energy spent to form everday items such as a bottle of water. "The others are slaving out there for how many hours a week to fill their houses with this crap at the same time they're throwing it away" the narrator says of an easily fixed VCR found in the dumpster, pointing out both the wastefulness of resources and time. Along with the narrator's return to the material necessities of culture, Pomeroy also presents the need and importance of community. This book, by far, has been the best reminder that we share this earth and that everything comes at a cost.

Wow! Quite an adventure

This book really made me think. I found myself wondering about what is nature, why are we here, and what is needed to really live and have a good life? This guy is quite a character and quite a pleasure to read. I find myself wondering if his travels are real or imagined. I do believe that the underwater town is a real place and has quite an amazing history. I can't imagine the government damning up a river and flooding the town I had lived in all my life--it would be so strange to have all of the places that hold so many memories for me just cease to exist. What a rich history a scuba diver could discover while exploring such a place.

But that is really just a small part of this unique novel. Consumerism takes a bit hit in this novel. One wonders if true happiness is not to be found in material possessions, but lies elsewhere. That is what the author challenges each of us to discover. Could I do as the narrator does and give up all I have in order to find true harmony within myself? After reading this book I believe I am closer to discovering the answer to that question. Write on, Dr. Pomeroy.

The Inspector General, is a satirical play by the Russian and Ukrainian dramatist and novelist Nikolai Gogol. Originally published in 1836, the play was revised for an 1842 edition. Based upon an anecdote allegedly recounted to Gogol by Pushkin, the play is a comedy of errors, satirizing human greed, stupidity, and the extensive political corruption of Imperial Russia. The corrupt officials of a small Russian town, headed by the Mayor, react with terror to the news that an incognito inspector (the revizor) will soon be arriving in their town to investigate them. The flurry of activity to cover up their considerable misdeeds is interrupted by the report that a suspicious person has arrived two weeks previously from Saint Petersburg and is staying at the inn. That person, however, is not an inspector; it is Khlestakov, a foppish civil servant with a wild imagination. The dream-like scenes of the play, often mirroring each other, whirl in the endless vertigo of self-deception around the main character, Khlestakov, who personifies irresponsibility, light-mindedness, absence of measure. ”He is full of meaningless movement and meaningless fermentation incarnate, on a foundation of placidly ambitious inferiority” (D.S. Mirsky). The publication of the play led to a great outcry in the reactionary press. It took the personal intervention of Tsar Nicholas I to have the play staged, with Mikhail Shchepkin taking the role of the Mayor.

Great play, terrible edition

Gogol's Inspector General is a fantastic play. I teach this text in my Russian Literature class, and students respond well, find it both funny and tragic, and it is typically one of the most popular things we read in the course. I don't need to sell Gogol; Gogol sells himself and deserves to sit alongside the greats of any literary pantheon.

The issue is that this edition, as well as The Echo Library edition (which uses the same translation) is awful. The typeface and all that is fine, particularly in the Forgotten Books version, but it's full of typos and jacked up textual errors. For example, every time the Doctor's name is printed, it reads, "Hübner" This is pretty terrible, and as I said, it's the same in this edition and the Echo Library. You know, it's kind of like there's one pdf document with this translation, floating in space, and they just keep hitting print whenever a new order comes in, and so the typos and problems keep getting repeated.

Of course, there are no other recent editions of the play that are available at a reasonable price, and those that are available are typically in an out of print edition. So, if you want to read this great play, you're sort of stuck with this miserable translation and edition, but at least if you know going into your purchase that it needs to be proofread, maybe it won't make you as mad as it makes me.

An entertaining and (relatively) light read.

The play describes the fawning reaction of corrupt town officials to the news that a government inspector is coming to pay a visit.

Two of the characters, Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky, are reminiscent of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in comic confusion. The governor's wife and daughter reminded me of Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, trying to get her daughter married (while flirting herself!) It was a little difficult to keep track of some of the characters, but it didn't matter.

The play is entertaining and amusing--something rarely said of classical Russian literature. The final joke is predictable (possibly because we have had over 150 years of literary and theatrical comedy building on similar comic ideas.) Still an enjoyable read.

About the Author
John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).
 
After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.
 
Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.
 
The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989).
 
Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. 

Susan Shillinglaw is a professor of English San Jose State University. She is the author of On Reading the Grapes of Wrath and Carol and John Steinbeck: Portrait of a Marriage.

A story about both Russia and about two journalists

I read this book after returning home from a two week trip in Southwestern Russia. Steinbeck and Capa took their journey in 1948. They travel from Moscow to Volgograd and Rostov before turning back in Georgia. Much of the tension in this book springs from the rapidly cooling relationship between leaders of Russia and the United States at that point in time.
Their aim is not political. They seek to understand the hearts of the Soviet people. One of the amusing elements of this book is their regular conflict with the Soviet censors, who refuse to believe that they do not have political motives. Steinbeck intersperses the commentary on Russia with the nuts and bolts of their daily travels. The method mirrors the approach of his 1940 collaboration in the Gulf of California, "The Log from the Sea of Cortez." Steinbeck likes to write about the universal character of people and this trip to Russia or his previous trip in Mexico both speak to that interest. His conclusion is that Russians are like people anywhere else - they are proud of their homes and their families and are sincere in their efforts to build their nascent country. Steinbeck also goes to pains to elicit the hope among the Russian people for peace.
Many of the things that catch their eye remain constant to now. One interesting change is the perspective of the Russian people about the direction of their country. In Steinbeck's recollection, the people recognize that they are sacrificing for the good of their country. In 1948, the Russians expect that they will eventually gain from their hard work. Now they seem to have less faith.
This book is a great chance to learn about the personality of the world famous Robert Capa. During his travels with the Hungarian photojournalist, Steinbeck gets pretty pesky about Capa's personal habits. It seems that Capa likes long baths, other people's books, and morning silence. Steinbeck and Capa share rooms during their trip. I really enjoyed the secondary theme that develops on Capa's behavior.
Everyone should read this book, not just people who want to know about Russia.

Great book, but buy in hardback - photo quality in the 1999 edition is poor

This is a great book, but you should buy a hardback edition instead of the paperback. I am a frequent visitor to Russia and I enjoyed the oportunity to compare and contrast Russia today with postwar Russia under Stalin. Unfortunately, Robert Capa's photos in the 1999 paperback are small and muddy. I could not even recognize places that I have visited many times. This book was a collaborative effort, but the 1999 printing seriously short changes Capa's contribution.

I don't know if the images are better in the 2001 paperback or the Kindle version, but after reading the 1999 edition I got a copy of the 1948 hardback via Amazon. I recommend that you do the same if you want to fully enjoy this excellent work.

Post-war Russia through very talented eyes

This wonderfully written book takes you through post-war Soviet Union, to farms and cities devastated by war but struggling to return to normalcy. Robert Capa not only adds wonderful photos but his role in this story is both funny and illuminating for any Capa fans. Written in the late 1940s, the story provides us with a very human side of the Russian people. The openness and friendliness of everyone they meet contrasts with the paranoia and hatred so present in the US at that time.
I read this as both a photographer and one who was recently in Russia and the insight provided was very enjoyable and educating. Capa's mannerisms and method of photography allowed his subjects to open up and feel comfortable in his lens -- not an easy thing since so many of the people had lost family and suffered terribly. Steinbeck's writing is honest, funny and his skills as a non-partisan reporter really shine in this work.
