From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–While it won't replace a more traditional study of anatomy, this book covers the basics in good detail, always relating the discussion of bones and muscle groups to the exaggerated physiology found in comic books. The illustrations are lavish, often in full color, with black and white used for the drawings where color would obscure the lesson being imparted. A mixture of comic-book-proportioned anatomical drawings and finished art helps to show the transition between fact and presentation, with the text highlighting what has been emphasized as well as what has been left out to get the proper look. The last part of the book includes a discussion of how the comic-book business works and several interviews with artists, all of which drift from the topic of anatomy somewhat but is still useful and interesting. Attractively presented and educational, this title will be popular with comic-book fans who like to draw.–Paul Brink, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

A Pleasent Surprise
By Matthew Pulido
I am an artist by trade. I grew up wanting to draw comics. Since getting an art (illustration)degree I have used my talent mainly on local adds and a few small book projects. But I still read comics, and draw them when I can.

I stumbled on this book in Barnes & Noble's one day, and flipped through it and it's counter part on Cutting Edge Comics. Both impressed me, so I picked this one up and put the other on my short list.

Anatomy is a tricky subject. I studied it in college, and a have a decent understanding. I own several other anatomy books, and even the art ones seem more for doctors than artists. And lets face it, comic book characters arn't built like normal people. All that said, I think this book does a wonderful job of laying out the muscle groups, explaining how they work, and exagerating them for comic book use. Both scientific and common terms are used, everything is in plain english, and there are plenty of examples. While at times it seems more like a referance guide than a how to book, that isn't really a problem. Every great artist knows the value of good referances. Over all the art is of an above average quality, with a few gems here and there. While it may not be as flashy as some of the best art currently being published in comics, it's still clear, well done, and easily gets it's point accross.

I don't think an young artist can go wrong giving this book a look.

another opinion . . .
By sarah palaszynski
i am an illustrator and a recent art college graduate and i actually found this book very informative and helpful.

i was surprised by the negative reviews of the book because i saw it as a very adequete refresher course of the lessons and ideas i learned in my classes while majoring in Illustration.

it covers 7 (and sometimes 9 and 12) head anatomy, muscles and how they react while in action, facial muscles, veins, and skeletal structure.

it also covers important details like body language, eye structure, LIGHT SOURCES, and surface mapping (to get an impression of the form and dimension s of the body).

i'm actually using a few sections of this book in a con-ed cartooning class for children i'm teaching at the moment.

i'd recommend the book if you want a quick run through of the differnt ideas for constructing the comicbook ideal of anatomy. from these ideals you can branch out into your own style and make it your own.

It made me a better artist!
By Young Artist
I am a 15-year-old and have been interested in drawing comic book art for a few years now. I started out buying How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. It was really good, yes because well-established comic book artist wrote it, but it didn't really grab my attention. Then, I saw How to Draw Cutting Edge Comics. This book really got me into drawing comic book characters. Then, I saw that he had a new book, How to Draw Cutting Edge Anatomy. I was especially excited because drawing the actual people interested me more than drawing anything else in comics. I quickly looked through it and bought it. I have never looked back.

It honestly taught me so much. It starts with skeletal structure which, I believe, has to be the first thing an artist needs to learn before learning the rest of the anatomy. Then, it goes on to basic muscles. After this, it has many sections focusing on different muscle groups and parts of the body. While the pictures do help, it was what he wrote that helped. They way he explains what the muscles look like and how they move is very understandable. I loved it.

I have been looking for an anatomy book that's at least moderately clean - I'm just not comfortable with drawing nude figures; I just want to draw comics. There are not very many comic book drawing books out there that focus on anatomy and are still modest. This one does a great job of it and it is one of the cleanest ones I have found. Some of the pictures of the girls are seductive and immodest, but I try to not focus on that. There's so much more to learn in this book!

The styles of other how-to-draw-comics just didn't catch my attention like this one did. You see, I don't want to develop a Stan Lee or George Perez style, I want my own. Learning from an author that isn't an established artist in the comic book world seemed to ease the pressure of making my style like his. All I can say is that I love this book. It has its flaws, yes, but every how-to-draw book has its flaws. I read this drawing book, and others, but especially this one, to help me draw better. What can I say? I love it!

Breakable Things, by Loren Kleinman

After the fracture, after the breaks in the surface, there is always light. Breakable Things is a testament to the idea that everything is breakable, and everything somehow finds its way back together again. Whether it's past, present, and future; falling in love and out; or darkness and light, life is full of beautiful contrasts. Loren Kleinman presents the world in breakable objects: bones, cabinets, hearts, sexuality, and more. She shows us that broken does not mean damaged, and that it's a necessary part in the process of becoming a whole person.
Here's what people are saying about Breakable Things:                Breakable Things is a rattling tribute to the fragility of consciousness and memory. "I'm cut on the floor, / porcelain in the skin, / and he breaks / he breaks he breaks he breaks me," Loren Kleinman writes. Fastened with pinching, deep detail, the shock of loss and a seasoned sense of being resonate throughout this book. Here Kleinman describes the bewilderment of being and the feelings that come from breathing, existing. "I step into the dirt. / Its dampness / makes me feel I exist." Caked with shame and smoke, soot and blinking bugs Kleinman renders a panorama of sharp, dazzling poems that haunt and captivate us long after the reading of this book is completed.

-- Geoffrey Gatza, Publisher, BlazeVOX [books]

With unpretentious clarity, guts and a bit of soul, Breakable Things has solidified Loren Kleinman as my favorite new poet.

-- Kola Boof, The Sexy Part of the Bible, Akashic Books

[Breakable Things] has a visceral quality. The images and lines within these poems are precise and surprising--layered with texture. I was drawn in by the details and kept connected with the phrasing. There is a flow to this text, a common experience of relationships coupled with the unique perspective of being alone, which creates fascination within the reader.

--    Jason Carney, author of Starve the Vulture, Kaylie Jones Books

Loren Kleinman's shining new collection of poems "Breakable Things" examines love and loss and renewal in its many faces. This is a collection, yes, where things are cracked and breaking, where people are "dressed in shame and smoke", but there are, as well, highly charged erotic poems that engages the fusing of not only bodies but of souls as well. There are poems of touching intimacy --- memorials and testimonials to mothers, lovers, children and friends, as well very sensual poems to the ocean, the moon and the love of various kinds of foods as in the gorgeous "Wildlife in my Kitchen." This is a collection where "Two boys" before our astonished eyes, "become butterflies" and then there is the truly outstanding, "Your Body is a Green Dress" that confronts and seeks to make sense of the atrocity of a sixteen year olds death at the hands of her classmate.  This is a raw, powerful collection of poems that deserves a place on all our bookshelves.

A wiry kind of human spirit
By D
A conundrum: Loren Kleinman has been to the depths. There is, in this book,a well of sorrow so fraught with anguish that no human reading it could escape the long physical pull on heart, on stomach, on soul.

Yet. Yet. It escapes despair. Somehow, when the plunge is deep, when the slide is nearly at the bottom, when the moment of no return should be there, when Kleinman should be saying to us, "Okay, here we suck the gas, slit the vein, give in to the endless sucking hole from which there is no return" - there is a veering off. Not cowardice. Not a flitting butterfly of sticky-goo. Not "and then I woke up." Not even the smiley face of the cover art, really.

If I had to venture a guess, Kleinman presents more a wiry kind of human spirit: it takes so little to let go, but only a little more to hold on. Whatever seeks to destroy you, isn't worthy of the victory. The man, the dope, the world that berates, attacks or just ignores you: You're better than that. She's better than that.

Humans are breakable things. And mendable things. Most times.

No Faking It Here
By Susan Tepper
These economical poems have a deep root structure and many leaves and petals, yet they are by no means nature poems in the traditional sense. What Kleinman has written in this book are 'human nature' poems that deal with all the pain and foibles we species of a lesser form possess. This poet knows how to create emotional tension without milking the poem to death. The beauty here is that life is presented without artifice, and with great amounts of honesty in the face of human troubles. No faking it here. Most highly recommended.

Real as it Gets!
By Dustin Botta
Sometimes her words hug you, and slap your face, and kick you in the gut. Maybe a bit lower too. 1/2 beautiful, 1/4 raw, 1/4 ethereal. 4/4 amazing.

Kleinman excels when she drops a real thing down, painfully low, and then elevates it. Shes masterful at her art. Her plays with language is spectacular and at times surprising - in a good way. Loved it! I need more!

The Objects, The Beds I've Slept In, and First-Date Oysters are standouts for me.

Anthropologist: Scientist of the People, by Mary Batten

Imagine making your living by hunting, fishing, and collecting wild plants and insects. Imagine having to worry about being attacked by a jaguar or some other wild animal. This is how our ancestors lived for hundreds of thousands of years, but only a few peoples carry on this ancient lifestyle today. One of the few are the Ache, hunter-gatherers living in Paraguay, a country in South America.
Magdalena Hurtado is an anthropologist who has been studying the Ache for fifteen years. She has spent years living with the Ache people: learning their language, observing their history. The photographs and text offer invaluable insight into the work of an anthropologist.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-A stunning photo-essay about the life and work of Hurtado, an anthropologist who has been studying the Ach‚ people in Paraguay for 15 years. The well-organized, logical text intertwines the information about these hunter-gatherers and the changes in their society with insight into the anthropologist's methods of observation, data collection, and analysis. Unfamiliar terms are effortlessly explained. The large, full-color photographs sometimes fill an entire page and show individuals engaged in daily activities. There are also a couple of maps (without a scale or compass rose). Batten gently explains that there are many reasons for studying other cultures. Her respect for the work of Hurtado is evident as is her concern for the future of the Ach‚. This book is an excellent choice for booktalking and it will fill requests for assignment material on careers, women's history month, introductory anthropology, and the peoples of South America. Reluctant older readers will be enticed by the photos. Students who enjoy this title may also be interested in Joan Mark's Margaret Mead (Oxford, 2001), which offers a more complete life and education of a female anthropologist, and Jan Reynolds's Amazon Basin (Harcourt, 1993), a photo exploration of the life of the Yanomama people of the Amazon region.

Gr. 4-7. From the Scientists in the Field series that produced outstanding titles such as Nic Bishop's Digging for Bird Dinosaurs (2000) come these fine new entries. Anthropologist introduces readers to Magdalena Huriado and Kim Hill, a husband-and-wife team who study the Ache of Paraguay, one of the few remaining hunting and gathering peoples. Batten's graceful text covers basic science concepts (what an anthropologist really does; what evolutionary biology is) in accessible, clear language and examples just right for kids, offering fascinating hypotheses along the way. Hidden Worlds focuses on the work of Hawaii-based microscopist Dennis Kunkel. The text nicely illustrates how a scientist explores, discovers, and formulates questions. The stunning color photographs, provided by the scientists themselves, are the books' real strength. Huriado and Hill's shots bring the Ache's way of life up close, without sensationalizing, while kids will pore over Kunkel's magnified shots of a carpet flea, red blood cells, and more. Substantive, readable, and visually outstanding. Gillian Engberg

MARVELLOUS INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY
By Fifth Generation Texan
This biography of the young Venezuelan anthropologist Magdalena Hurtado provides a very clear description of her fieldwork among one of the world's last foraging peoples, the Ache indians of Paraguay. This beautifully illustated book provides the best available introduction for young readers of what it is an anthropologist does. Although the publishers recommend the book for ages 9-12, my guess is that students in junior high and high school --perhaps especially young women -- will find the book both informative and inspirational.

Great book for kids and adults
By A Customer
I gave this book to my 3 yr old neice and 6 yr old nephew, and they were as fascinated by it as their mother and father were. The pictures are wonderful and the text really gives you the feel of what the lives of one of the last groups of hunter gatherers in the world are like. And it paints a detailed and fascinating picture of what it is like to be an anthropologist studying and loving a people whose lives are so different from our own. A really enjoyable book.

Amazon.com Review
Dominique Lapierre was one of the pioneers of the subjective news story, a man who was never afraid to put himself, both physically and emotionally, at the heart of his reports. It is a style that has often been imitated, but as A Thousand Suns shows, it has seldom been bettered. In 1944, Lapierre won his own footnote in history by misdirecting the German tanks and accelerating the liberation of Paris by two days. You could argue that ever since, he has been making sure that other people get the credit they deserve.

A Thousand Suns is both a personal memoir and a testament to the notable characters Lapierre met along the way, from the great and the good, such as Mother Teresa, to the infamous (such as Caryl Chessman, who was executed in San Quentin in 1960), to the more anonymous. Throughout, Lapierre is always looking for the personal details that make the stories come alive. And he finds them. He discovers that General von Choltitz, the Nazi in charge of occupied Paris, had had an overcoat made in the summer of 1944 "because he thought it would be cold in a POW camp." Kozo Okamato, the only surviving Red Army Faction (RAF) member to bomb Lod airport, tells him he became a terrorist after being dumped twice by girlfriends. "At the time the RAF seemed a less demanding lover." These are the insights that animate Lapierre's work, and he is never afraid to find the humanity in even the most apparently evil of people.

However, this tendency is both a virtue and his undoing, as Lapierre sometimes allows his obvious affection for his subject to cloud all judgment. An example can be found in his accounts of Lord Mountbatten of Burma. Mountbatten was a known charmer, but his record on the partition of India does not bear scrutiny. His fudging of the boundaries, and the speed with which he acted, was undoubtedly a significant factor in the mass bloodshed that followed. Lapierre lets him off the hook with a single sentence: "By extricating his country from the Indian wasps' nest without spilling a drop of British blood, Mountbatten had saved Great Britain from one of those colonial wars of which France had made a speciality." Even for a partisan observer, this simply will not do. But a journalist who cares too much is always preferable to one who doesn't care at all, and Lapierre especially so, for the range and depth of his reportage, if nothing else. He harks back to a more innocent age when public figures were more open and trusting; few journalists would get anything like the access to equivalent figures today. Enjoy him, warts and all. You won't see his like again. --John Crace, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
Blending autobiographical memoir and popular history, French journalist Lapierre's (City of Joy) engrossing chronicle focuses on men and women whose courage, determination or resistance made a difference. Many of these movers and shakers are people he interviewed and highlighted in his previous bestselling books. Some of them fit awkwardly into the narrative's overall heroic mold: Spanish bullfighter Manuel Benites El Cordobes brings out Lapierre's corny side; Nazi general Dietrich von Choltitz, who refused to carry out Hitler's orders to raze Paris, was, as Lapierre notes, unaware of the imminent arrival of reinforcements. But we do get real heroes, including Mahatma Gandhi, Raphael Matta (a Parisian businessman who became an African game reserve warden and was eventually murdered by poachers) and Ehud Avriel (the refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria who helped engineer the clandestine mass immigration of European Jews to the fledgling state of Israel). Though long-winded at times, Lapierre tells incredible tales of true-life adventure, and he is a valuable eyewitness to history, whether he is joining castaways in the mass exodus of Algeria's French population following that colony's independence or making an unprecedented automobile trip across the USSR in 1956. A bestseller in France, Italy and Spain, this book humanizes many of the cataclysmic events of the tumultuous century now ending. Agent, Morton Janklow.

From Kirkus Reviews
An intriguing, albeit subjective, look at some of this century's most interesting people. Lapierre (The City of Joy, 1985, etc.) has had the writing gig of the century. As a reporter for Paris Match, among other periodicals, he has traveled the world and chronicled some seminal historical moments. Here he recounts meetings with everyone from Mother Teresa to Mahatma Gandhi. Particularly rivetingand grippingly writtenis a chapter on the last days of death-row inmate Caryl Chessman, who insisted on his innocence to his dying breath. Lapierre interviews Chessman six times and records firsthand each last-ditch effort to save the man, who eluded execution eight times in 12 years. The California judge's call to stay the execution one last time reached the prison five seconds after the cyanide pills had been dropped into the sulfuric acid. Interspersed with the ``interviews'' is Lapierre's own story, which raises this quibble: The book seems a tad self-serving at times. Was the famous bullfighter El Cordobes really a vital 20th-century figureone of the ``thousand suns'' referred to in the Indian proverb from which the book derives its titleor is he a convenient, albeit fascinating, means to remind the reader that Lapierre and Larry Collins wrote a book (Or I'll Dress You in Mourning) based on their Reader's Digest profile of the Spaniard? Still, the book is lively and Lapierre a terrific tour guide. Besides, it's hard to dislike an author who has used millions of dollars in book royalties to help bring medical care to desperately indigent people in Calcutta, a point Lapierre carefully annotates in an appendix that outlines the work he has accomplished there and in the Ganges Delta before giving addresses for readers who want to make donations. Memoir or selective chronicle of a century? Regardless, you'll keep reading. (30 b&w photos) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Make Your Hobby Your Profession ! ! ! ! ! ! !
By Datar
1. 'A Thousand Suns', a fascinating book by Dominique Lapierre, famous author of books like `Is Paris Burning' and `City of Joy' takes its title from and Indian proverb that the author chanced upon during his stay in South India. It comes from (as indicated by the author) "Behind every cloud, there are a thousand suns". A perfect message for life in present day's gloomy outlook of life.

2. It goes without saying that the book, which has such a beautiful and motivating title ought to be full of life energy and epitomize everything that is the very essence of meaningful life. This book actually is a byproduct, but a beautiful and useful one. It consists of 15 independent well researched real life stories, which the author encountered in the run up to doing a specific assignment mainly related to the prime characters or places related to these stories, initially as a news correspondent and later as a writer.

3. At the end thus, he filed his reports / wrote his books, but the enduring beauty of life enshrined in the background of these reports / books remained. The author has really done a wonderful service to mankind by writing this book; else such beautiful pearls of human endeavor, wisdom, perseverance and enterprise would have been lost forever.

4. Written in a simple style with stress on delivering the message right, the author might have not achieved perfection of narrative, but what needed to be achieved i.e. delivery of the essentials of beauty of life has been achieved with perfection.

5. It is rightly said that `make your hobby your profession and you would not have to work for a day'. It is evident from reading this book that Mr Lapierre seems to have not worked for a day but have thoroughly enjoyed this life following his passion for writing.

6. All those who have faith in life and mankind and all those whose faith on these is wavering for some reasons must read this book to derive the requisite benefit.

A rivetting, if not accurate, read
By Karina Bray
This dude knows how to write. Throughout the book, his passion, respect and sometimes joy as he describes life's adventures and the amazing people he has met permeate his writing. He brings the events to life, makes them very real.
In particular, his horrific account of the death of Caryl Chessman brought tears to my eyes. How could it be that in a so-called civilised country such deaths continue? I was outraged and appalled to learn from Lapierre that of the 500 death executions since 1977, 'seventy-five concerned men and women whose innocence was proven after their death.' 75 innocent people killed! Mon dieu! Er no, actually -- I've since found out from various anti-death penalty web sites that in fact 75 (or now around 85) people were released (ALIVE) from death row after their innocence was proven. The distinction, I think, is rather important!
He also claims that 'California has remained faithful to its gas chambers' as a manner of execution. As far as I could find out from various government and anti-death penalty web sites, California uses primarily, if not solely, lethal injection to dispose of its unwanted citizens.
Lapierre's account of 'tarantulas as hairy as apes' in Africa would excite ecologists -- who perhaps foolishly think wild tarantulas exist only in the Americas -- as much as his (unfortunately mistaken) sighting of a rhinoceros excited his host in the Ivory Coast.
Characterising Mohatma Gandhi with temporal accuracy, if somewhat dismissively, as 'an elderly half-naked Indian...living in poverty' no doubt adds credence to his amazement at the 'miraculous alchemy' and mutual understanding that existed between Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten. But is it really so miraculous when one considers that the middle-class Gandhi had studied for and received a law degree from London University and practiced as a barrister in South Africa for 20 years? Is it so miraculous that two educated men with experience in and a good understanding of each other's cultures could then understand each other?
Obviously any account of events is going to carry some subjectivity, like his rather derogatory characterisation of Gandhi, but it's disturbing when things presented as facts, like the huge number of innocent death row victims, are blatantly incorrect. It made me wonder how many other factual errors I'd inadvertantly absorbed as truth.
Nevertheless, it is great read, lively and interesting, and his contribution to the welfare of the poorest of the poor in India goes beyond admirable. Just take the 'facts' with a grain of salt!

a must for anyone who has ever read a Lapierre book!
By A Customer
This wonderful series of adventures and relationships brings the reader into the fascinating world of Dominique Lapierre. He carries us back through his many and widely varied "assignments" as a journalist and author over the last 50 +years. Dominique and his wife shared many of the experiences .He makes you feel he is talking directly to you and sharing feelings that are close to his heart. Anyone who has ever read "City of Joy" and was moved by the story of Calcutta slums will really be interested in the background stories he provides which lead the writing of the book. I was only familiar with the author through his "City of Joy" book but after finishing "A Thousand Suns" I am anxious to read his other books. Longtime fans of the author will certainly relish this latest addition to their Lapierre library but anyone reading these stories will be caught up in the author's ability to evoke a sense of hope in seemingly hopeless situations.
