Equine Massage: A Practical Guide, by Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt LMT

People in the horse world know all too well that performance horses, like human athletes, are trained, fed and cared for so they can go faster, jump higher and run longer. Daily training and competing can result in injuries, aches and pains, which if treated by drugs alone may only mask the problem and not remedy it. This is why equine massage therapist Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt created a program of techniques that will enable owners and riders, trainers and grooms to:

  • Alleviate soreness and pain in the horse's most vulnerable stress sites.
  • Identify and treat the injuries common to any horse sport.
  • Use relaxation and maintenance routines for the horse's mental and physical well-being.
Hourdebaigt provides step-by-step instruction and more than 150 photographs and diagrams so that everyone?including nonprofessionals?can learn to massage their horse. Equine Massage may be the key to unlocking the door to a horse's future, one that promises good health and improved performance.

About the Author
About the Author JEAN-PIERRE HOURDEBAIGT is a Registered Massage Therapist. Originally from France, Hourdebaigt moved to Canada in 1981, where he continued a generations-old family practice of natural healing. After graduating from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy, he pursued a successful career treating many well-known athletes and dignitaries. It was his passion for animals, however, that lead him to educate animal lovers in the art and therapeutic application of massage techniques to help their horses, cats and dogs. For many years he has worked on horses of all breeds and in all disciplines. With only two hands and so many horses to help, he created workshops in equine massage (preventative, maintenance, recovery and post-surgery) to instruct owners and riders. He wrote Equine Massage to reach a wider audience beyond those who come to study with him in Ottawa, Canada.

Clear, well written and well illustrated
By Vivien Dostine
I already had a few basic massage techniques from my equine physio and this book is exactly what I wanted to further my knowledge.

The beginning of the book includes a series of clear detailed anatomical pictures. One of the final sections looks at the kinesiology of the horse and common injuries, stress points and problems for various sporting disciplines.

Each technique is then described and shown. Practical hints such as using your bathroom scales to work out what 'X'lbs of pressure feels like, abound.

To make the book even better there are then sections which describe what various 'routines' might be made up of (relaxation for instance) and how long to spend etc. There are also recommendations for how to start with a new horse, body signals to look for and when you may need a helper.

A marvelous book for any horse owner or lover...
By Laura Haggarty
This is a great book. It is filled with excellent charts and illustrations, as well as thorough explanations of techniques the average horse owner/lover can use to help create and increase wellness in their horse.
The book covers the following: Anatomy and Physiology of the Horse; The Horse and Massage Therapy; Principles and Concepts of Massage; Hydrotherapy; Massage Techniques and Routines; Kinesiology of the Horse; Stretching; Conformation Check-up Routine; Body Parts and Their Stress Points; Areas of Stress Specific to Each Discipline; Keeping Records.
This book begs to be taken to the stable with you, and the format makes it easy to use there. It is spiral bound, which makes it easy to leave open to a section from which you're working, and the cover is easily wiped off if it gets dirty (not that we ever get dirty at the barn, eh?). All in all this is a marvelous book, don't hesitate to buy it!

Great Place to Start
By Sarah
I am thoroughly enjoying this book from cover to cover. It covers so much detail, in easy to understand terms, so regardless what level you are with you horse, you can learn something to help you understand and benefit your horse from this book! Along with plain English, the pictures and diagrams are informative but not crowd!

Raging Bull: My Story, by Jake La Motta, Joseph Carter, Peter Savage

Meet Jake La Motta: thief, rapist, killer. Raised in the Bronx slums, he fought on the streets, got sent to reform school, and served time in prison. Trusting no one, slugging everyone, he beat his wife, his best friends, even the mobsters who kept the title just out of reach. But the same forces that made him a criminal—fear, rage, jealousy, self-hate, guilt—combined with his drive and intelligence to make him a winner in the ring. At age twenty-seven, after eight years of fighting, he became Middleweight Champion of the World, a hero to thousands. Then, at the peak of success, he fell apart and began a swift, harrowing descent into nightmare. Raging Bull, the Bronx Bull's brutally candid memoir, tells it all—fights, jails, sex, money—surpassing, in hard-hitting prose, even the movie that immortalized it.

Amazon.com Review
In prose as straightforward and at times as brutal as his style in the ring, former middleweight champion Jake LaMotta wove together an unforgettable autobiography: first published in 1970, Raging Bull was violent, candid, primitive, smart, and altogether powerful. It still is. His story, adapted for the screen in 1980 by Martin Scorsese in the Oscar-winning film starring Robert De Niro, is filled with anger--at his father for beating him, at the neighborhood he grew up in, at the petty criminal he became, at the Mob that tried to keep him from the title because he wouldn't take a dive--and real candor about the dive he did take (out in the real world when his boxing career was over). While most of LaMotta's anger was self-directed, he harnessed enough of it to power him to 83 victories in 106 fights, and a two-year hold on a championship belt. His recounting of his ring wars with Sugar Ray Robinson and Marcel Cerdan remain as convincingly primal on the page as they were in the arena.

But the same forces that made him criminal - fear, rage, jealousy, self-hate, guilt - combined with his drive and intelligence to make him a winner in the ring. At age 27, after eight years of fighting, he became Middleweight Champion of the World, a hero to thousands. Then, at the peak of success, he fell apart, and began a swift, harrowing descent into nightmare. Raging Bull, the Bronx Bull's brutally candid memoir, tells it all - fights, jails, sex, money - surpassing, in hard-hitting prose, even the movie that immortalized it.

Definitely one of the best books on a boxer's life
By McTeague
There is what seems to be a running joke in Raging Bull II, the sequel to this book, where whenever Jake wants to hit on a woman he gives her a copy of "Raging Bull". In typical "Hit 'em first, hit 'em hard" Jake LaMotta style, he usually inscribes it with something like, "To Beautiful, Gorgeous, Sexy Sally, Good Luck, The Champ." Later on, when Jake asks the woman what she thought of the book, the woman invariably replies, "I didn't believe a word of it."

I knew a man from New York boxing circles, who knew Jake and worked with him back in the late 50's and early 60's. He used to say that "Raging Bull" was the "Sound of Music" version of Jake's life.

Vikki LaMotta complained that the book "Raging Bull" was so highly embellished that she met "Pete," who in the book is portrayed as Jake's best friend and constant companion, only once during her entire 11-year marriage to Jake.

So what are we supposed to believe about "Raging Bull?" Honestly, I don't know. But I can tell you, having read my share, that this book and its sequel are two of the best written and most entertaining boxing memoirs ever written. A few observations:

1. The character in them called "Jake," an ex-hoodlum, tough guy middleweight champ, is one of the most realistic and believable characters in the whole noir genre, more realistic and believable than the characters played by James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart or anything in a James M. Cain or Raymond Chandler novel.

2. As pure storytelling, I'd say it's first rate. I really do admire the way the authors made sure that this was the case, truth or no truth. In literature as in boxing, you've got to entertain. The book deftly handles a combination of classic noir elements (tough guys, tough dames, lots of booze), psychology (the fears that haunt Jake from childhood and frequently explode in violence) and lurid pulp novel elements (he supposedly rapes an innocent neighborhood girl, turning her into an alcoholic prostitute). By the time the book ends there is no commandment left unbroken and no deadly sin left unexplored.

3. In the book Jake himself comes off as much more intelligent and charming than the version of him that appears in the movie. And one thing the movie Jake is missing, which is very apparent in this book, is that the real Jake has a very good sense of humor. If you happen to see any interviews with Jake on Youtube, you'll see this is the case.

4. The book has plot devices, which all good stories have, but which most memoirs generally lack. For all I know, there is no truth to the story of the bookie murdered by Jake, and the prison chaplain, which culminates on the night Jake wins the middleweight title. But the story features a plot twist worthy of Charles Dickens.

5. Boxing fans will enjoy the fact that Jake gives blow by blow details about his fights and their background, something surprisingly lacking in a lot of boxing books.

Again, among the best, most entertaining boxing books ever written.

The bittersweet science of life
By Aletheia Knights
It would be an understatement to say that I'm not really into sports. I can more or less follow a baseball game, and I get excited enough about football one day a year that I'm actually paying attention to what's happening on the field between Super Bowl commercials. More often than not you'll find me with my nose in a book. I'd never heard of "Raging Bull," or Jake LaMotta for that matter, before my husband and I decided to work our way through the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films. Since I have a rule about never watching a movie based on a book unless I've read the book first, I found myself picking up LaMotta's autobiography in order to prepare myself for the 1980 Martin Scorsese film adaptation.

Having heard that the book focused at least as much on LaMotta's personal struggles as on his athletic career, I thought I might find it a decent read. I wasn't expecting to be blown away, to find myself swept up in this man's life story and reluctant to put the book down. Even with the scholarly Joseph Carter as coauthor, I certainly wasn't expecting a masterful work of raw, beautiful prose, and yet that's exactly what I got. LaMotta dropped out of high school and freely admits he never had much use for education, so I imagine the pitch-perfect narrative flow owes much to Carter's input - but the narrative voice rings true as LaMotta all the way. Had I not known this was an autobiography and been asked to guess at the identity of the author, I would have imagined an experienced novelist who'd done his research, not a pugnacious pugilist simply writing what he knew. Yes, it reads like a first-rate novel: the writing's that good, and Jake LaMotta's life story is that compelling.

LaMotta opens his story, not in the ring or even in the gym, but in the streets of the Bronx slums; the first opponent to feel his wrath in these pages isn't a champion boxer like Sugar Ray Robinson or Marcel Cerdan, but an amiable neighborhood bookie, Harry Gordon. It's not a fair fight, either; sixteen-year-old LaMotta sneaks up behind his victim, bashes his head in with a pipe, grabs his wallet, and leaves him to die in a vacant lot. It happens so casually, right there in the opening chapter, that we feel viscerally LaMotta's shock at the sudden and violent ease with which yesterday's small-time punk delinquent wakes up today a killer.

When the cops haul him down to the station a couple of days later, LaMotta is so relieved to find himself arrested for an earlier bungled burglary, not Gordon's murder, that even the prospect of a few months away in reform school doesn't seem so terrible - that is, until he gets there. When he's caught trying to escape, the prison chaplain takes a special interest in him and arranges for him to work in the gym there, where he can hone his talents as a fighter. His skill at throwing a punch has helped him survive in the mean streets, but now he begins to dream of a career as a professional boxer. Instead of resuming his life of crime after his release, he devotes himself to hours of rigorous training.

It isn't long before his career takes off, but his unwillingness to do business with the mob keeps him out of the running for the championship title both he and the boxing world at large know he deserves. In the meantime, although he's bringing in prize purses equivalent to nearly a million dollars a year in today's money, the legacy of his violent childhood proves harder to cast off than the poverty of the Bronx slums. Incapable of trust and accustomed to solving problems with his fists, he finds himself trapped in a cycle of rage, self-hatred, and regret.

You don't have to know a thing about boxing to understand and enjoy "Raging Bull." My knowledge when I picked up this book was something like, "Weight classes (with funny names). Ring (even though it's square). Corner (which is where we get the idiom from). Ten-count. Knockout. Also, technical knockout, whatever the heck that is." It's not until about a third of the way into the book that there's any boxing action at all, and by the time I'd read that far, I was hanging on LaMotta's every word. To my surprise, I found the boxing scenes quite exciting, and I learned quite a bit about the sport - I was even inspired to read some more about it online (I know what a TKO is now) and look up some of LaMotta's fights on YouTube.

Far more than a great boxing story, however, "Raging Bull" is a great human story, the rise and fall and redemption of a wounded champion. I can't remember the last time I read an autobiography so pragmatically and piercingly honest: this is, after all, a man who pulls no punches. LaMotta doesn't hold back from bragging when he's earned the right - he'll tell you straight-out there was a time when he was about as good a fighter as any man living - but never does he gloss over his faults or demand the reader's pity. He batters his wife and assaults his lifelong best friend in an unjustified jealous rage. His genial misogyny (women are broads, dames, dolls, fine to have around but never quite *people* entitled to the same basic respect he would offer any man) takes a sinister turn when he rapes an acquaintance ("I don't know how much responsibility I have to take for her [descent into promiscuity and drunkenness], but I'll take it," he offers in a rather lame jab at repentance, "though I still swear I didn't know she was a virgin"). His regrets concerning his criminal past, including the attack on Harry Gordon, seem, at least on the surface, to spring more from some superstitious fear of karmic retribution than from actual guilt and remorse. To call this man a jerk would be putting it mildly. "Bastard" is more like it, and a certain seven-letter compound word that starts with an "a" would be more appropriate still if Amazon didn't have rules about the use of profanity in reviews. LaMotta is by no means a sympathetic figure, but his unstinting honesty makes him an empathetic one. You may be repulsed by his actions, but on some level you can't help rooting for him. This is the voice of a man who has clearly worked hard to put the past behind him, but he hasn't turned into a saint and doesn't pretend to be, which actually lends him more relatability, and even genuine moral authority, than if he claimed to have shed his old skin and become a new creature entirely.

In "Raging Bull," the former middleweight champion has proved his greatness in an altogether different field of endeavor. This is a book of great courage, a stunning, harsh, beautiful, compelling look into the mind and heart of a man who has known passion and pain, valleys and peaks, pride and regret, and lived to tell the truth about all of them.

Mammoth Heart
By Pugwash
Rarely have I read an autobiography that uncovered more truth than a well written biography of the same subject. The angst and brutal honesty that pours off these pages makes it one of the most compelling sports stories ever written.

I typically do not enjoy reading autobiographies of any subjects unless it is written when a person is knocking on the door of old age. It is the perspective and the winsome look back at the mistakes and triumphs of a life fully lived, that makes a great biography.

But Jake LaMotta has phenomenal story to tell. One of the toughest fighters ever to lace on the gloves, LaMotta fought in what had to be the Golden Age of Middleweights. His six fights against Sugar Ray Robinson could have defined any boxing career, but in his case, it only a stop in his incredible fistic journey. at a time when Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano, Marcel Cerdan, Fritzie Zivic, and a host of excellent contenders patrolled the division, LaMotta worked his way up to top contender status. There he sat for four years, denied a shot at the title because he would not let Organized Crime control him. Not until he threw a fight to Billy Fox did he get his shot at Cerdan's title.

LaMotta was no choirboy. He had more ups and low lows than almost any man alive. His life hit lows and ignominy few men have endured. His name and reputation were sullied almost beyond redemption.

In 1970, he wrote this book. A story of wrenching catharsis, it shows that beyond the people he hurt outside of the ring, himself most, he has a heart and soul.

In 1980, Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorcese collaborated in a movie about his life. Though the movie showed a man and story without redemption, his life turned around, and redemption came.

At this writing, he is close to his ninetieth birthday. History judges him to be one of the great middleweights of all times, and his peers embraced him. Sugar Ray robinson was best man at one of his weddings, Rocky Graziano was a lifelong friend and his ex-wife Vicki remained a lifelong friend and confidant.

There are few books or stories that ever been written closer to the heart. And what a massive heart it is.

Nepal: Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan, Annapurna, Mustang, Ev (General Pictorial), by Richard I'Anson

In Nepal, internationally renowned photographer Richard I'Anson presents a vibrant photographic portrait of this fascinating Himalayan country.

Nepal first established itself as a travelers' mecca in the 1960s, when Kathmandu became an important stopover on the Asian overland route. It has been captivating visitors ever since with its impossibly picturesque villages, soaring snow-covered mountains, grand monuments, and ancient towns whose narrow streets are dotted with temples, tiny shrines and priceless art.

Since his first visit in 1986, I'Anson has returned to Nepal every year to photograph people and places all over the country, from the crowded streets of old Kathmandu to remote mountain passes and high Himalayan viewpoints.

For Nepal he has selected more than 400 stunning photographs covering five regions that always capture the imagination of visitors. Nepal celebrates a unique, ethnically diverse culture living amid incredible natural and urban environments - a heady mix that also includes accessible wildlife, outrageously colorful festivals, an artistic heritage spanning hundreds of years, and a welcoming people who inspire so many traveler to return again and again.

My favourite Nepal photo book has spctacular photos of Kathmandu, Chitwan, Annapurna, Upper Mustang, and Mount Everest
By Jerome Ryan
A large coffee-table type book featuring over 400 photos from renowned photographer Richard L'Anson. Chapters include Kathmandu and Kathmandu Valley (112 pages), Chitwan (20 pages), the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary (54 pages), Upper Mustang (20 pages), and the Mount Everest Khumbu region (51 pages). The front cover is Annapurna South Face.

Kathmandu is the largest portion of this perfect pictorial book. In addition to Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur tourist attractions, there are photos of other smaller villages in the valley and from Nagarkot. There are also photos of many of the festivals including Dasain, Indra Chatra, Holi, and Losar.

The Everest chapter includes Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Thami, Khumjung, Phortse, the Gokyo Valley, and the views from Gorak Shep and Kala Pattar.

The Annapurna chapter begins with Pokhara and Sarangkot. The views from Dhampus, Ghandruk and Poon Hill precede the photos from the Sanctuary itself.

Upper Mustang features photos from Kagbeni to Lo Manthang, pasing through Chuksang, Chele, Ghemi, Charang, Drakmar, and Tama Gaon.

This is my favourite Nepal photo book. It features all of the main tourist areas. The photos are spectacular.

XSLT: Mastering XML Transformations, by Doug Tidwell

XSLT documents a core technology for processing XML. Originally created for page layout, XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Transformations) is now much more: a general-purpose translation tool, a system for reorganizing document content, and a way to generate multiple results-- such as HTML, WAP, and SVG--from the same content. What sets XSLT apart from other books on this critical tool is the depth of detail and breadth of knowledge that Doug Tidwell, a developer with years of XSLT experience, brings to his concise treatment of the many talents of XSLT. He covers XSLT and XPath, a critical companion standard, and addresses topics ranging from basic transformations to complex sorting and linking. He explores extension functions on a variety of different XSLT processors and shows ways to combine multiple documents using XSLT. Code examples add a real-world dimension to each technique.Useful as XSLT is, its peculiar characteristics make it difficult to get started in, and the ability to use advanced techniques depends on a clear and exact understanding of how XSLT templates work and interact. For instance, the understanding of "variables" in XSLT is deeply different from the understanding of "variables" in procedural languages. The author explains XSLT by building from the basics to its more complex and powerful possibilities, so that whether you're just starting out in XSLT or looking for advanced techniques, you'll find the level of information you need.

Amazon.com Review
XML is an elegant and straightforward way to define data-centric documents to feed almost any kind of data processing or rendering system. The linchpin of many XML solutions, however, is XSLT. This standard provides a way to transform your XML documents into other XML formats, HTML, and almost any other format you wish. XSLT is an excellent tutorial on this critical technology, a must-have text for developers getting serious with XML.

This book is targeted at busy developers who want to learn standards-compliant skills with XSLT and learn them fast. The author uses the Apache Xalan XSLT engine for demonstration, but the material in the book is equally applicable to the XSLT engine in Microsoft's MSMXL parser, Saxon, and many other equivalent XSLT processors.

The material is presented logically from the transformation of a simple "Hello World!" XML file to an HTML document onto XPath locations, branching, linking, combining XML documents, and extension functions. After laying the groundwork for what XSLT can do, the author presents a fairly sophisticated case study--an online tutorial generator that generates HTML files, PDF files, and Zip files.

Aside from being a subject tutorial, XSLT is also an excellent reference that comes in handy for daily coding. The appendices cover XSLT, XPath, a function reference, and a frequently asked questions section. These reference sections include complete examples that make each concept quite clear. XSLT provides the horsepower behind XML, and this book provides the perfect vehicle to master transformation techniques. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Basic style sheet structure, XPath data model, branching and control elements, links and cross-references, sorting and grouping, combining XML documents, XSLT extension functions, case study, XSLT reference, XPath reference, function reference, XSLT guide (FAQ).

From the Publisher
When developers start out in XML, XSLT is often an important but baffling part of the package. Extensible Stylesheet Transformations (XSLT) are a critical bridge between XML processing and more familiar HTML, and dominates the market for conversions between XML vocabularies. Originally created for page-layout, XSLT has grown into one of the core technologies used by most developers processing XML. XSLT has become a general-purpose translation tool, a system for reorganizing document content, and a tool for generating multiple results (HTML, WAP, SVG, etc.) from the same content.

XSLT brings it all together. Its concise comprehensive treatment sets it apart from other books on the subject. It covers XSLT and XPath, a critical companion standard, and explores subjects from basic transformations to complex sorting and linking. In addition, the book explores extension functions on a variety of different XSLT processors, and combining multiple documents with XSLT. Examples demonstrate all of the techniques described.

Though XSLT is extremely useful, it's also extremely daunting to the average user. XSLT uses an XML-based template syntax combined with a terse vocabulary, called XPath, which identifies how the template applies to the original document. The understanding of "variables" in XSLT is deeply different from the understanding of "variables" in procedural languages, for instance. Getting started with XSLT is difficult, and advanced techniques require a through understanding of how XSLT templates work and interact with each other. Doug Tidwell, a developer with years of XSLT experience, explains XSLT by building from the basics to the more complex but powerful possibilities of XSLT. Readers just getting started and readers looking for advanced techniques will both find all the information they need.

Although Tidwell emphasizes a real-world approach to tackling XSLT and includes plenty of practical examples in the book, he doesn't skimp when it comes to delivering the types of conceptual explanations (sections like "How a Stylesheet is processed" in Chpt 2 and "The XPath View of an XML Document" in Chpt. 3) that help readers understand what's going on "under the hood". Including a separate chapter covering the basics of XPath early in the book also makes for much easier reading, since we aren't left scrounging for scraps of information scattered throughout the text when XPath-related questions arise. If not for the fact that some authors have actually taken the opposite approach (introducing XPath concepts as they arise in the context of a discussion of XSLT), this would have
seemed like a no-brainer.
No review of this book would be complete without mentioning the value added by the appendices. Once you've digested all of the material in the body of the text, you'll likely continue to keep Tidwell's book close at hand because of Appendices A and C. Appendix A, the XSLT Reference, features a comprehensive dictionary-style reference for every element in XSLT 1.0 - including an XML source document, an example stylesheet that makes use of the element, and the result of the transformation for each. Appendix C, the XSLT and XPath Function Reference, follows a similar format.

A Disappointment From O'Reilly.
By S. Gupte
This book is one of the most frustrating technical books I have ever read. The fact that it is from O'Reilly just makes it doubly insulting. The author doesn't bother to explain concepts. He just lists out the syntax for the various elements without bothering to explain how the instruction works. This book might be useful as an XSLT reference but it is useless as a learning tool. I totally agree with the other reviews of this book about the "huge honking examples" To give you an idea of how bad it is, the first XSLT example in this book is the obligatory "Hello World" example which is less than 20 lines. The second example is 3 pages long and uses concepts that have not been introduced at all!! The book also suffers from too many forward references. He keeps mentioning concepts that have no relation to the topic at hand. Sure, it might be great for completeness, but it just gets in the way when you're trying to learn a new concept and he keeps throwing additional, esoteric (by his own admission) stuff at you. In my opinion this is a very poorly written book.

Excellent advanced tutorial
By Taruvai Subramaniam
I approached this book expecting to be disappointed. After all there is no shortage of good introductions to XSLT on the web and in Micheal Kay's book we already have an authoritative reference. Actually this book is that rare breed - an advanced tutorial. The book begins with three chapters of introductory material. Wisely the author does not go into every feature. But the meat of the book is in chapters 5-8. It covers in detail keys() in chapter 6, sorting (chapter 7), document() ( chapter 8) and concludes with an excellent introduction to extension elements and functions. The writing is lucid and the author often evaluates alternative strategies. The appendix lists all the XSLT elements and functions with examples which alone is worth the admission. I have already read it twice and I recommend it strongly.

Brain Rules (Updated and Expanded): 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School, by John Medina

Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know—like the need for physical activity to get your brain working its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget—and so important to repeat new knowledge? Is it true that men and women have different brains?

In Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule—what scientists know for sure about how our brains work—and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.

Medina’s fascinating stories and infectious sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he proves that most of us have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes.

You will discover how:

Every brain is wired differently
Exercise improves cognition
We are designed to never stop learning and exploring
Memories are volatile
Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn
Vision trumps all of the other senses
Stress changes the way we learn
In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works—and how to get the most out of it.

Introduction

Go ahead and multiply the number 8,388,628 x 2 in your head. Can you do it in a few seconds? There is a young man who can double that number 24 times in the space of a few seconds. He gets it right every time. There is a boy who can tell you the precise time of day at any moment, even in his sleep. There is a girl who can correctly determine the exact dimensions of an object 20 feet away. There is a child who at age 6 drew such vivid and complex pictures, some people ranked her version of a galloping horse over one drawn by da Vinci. Yet none of these children have an IQ greater than 70.
The brain is an amazing thing.

Your brain may not be nearly so odd, but it is no less extraordinary. Easily the most sophisticated information-transfer system on Earth, your brain is fully capable of taking the little black squiggles in this book and deriving meaning from them. To accomplish this miracle, your brain sends jolts of electricity crackling through hundreds of miles of wires composed of brain cells so small that thousands of them could fit into the period at the end of this sentence. You accomplish all of this in less time than it takes you to blink. Indeed, you have just done it. What’s equally incredible, given our intimate association with it, is this: Most of us have no idea how our brain works.

12 Brain Rules
My goal is to introduce you to 12 things we know about how the brain works. I call these Brain Rules. For each rule, I present the science, introduce you to the researchers behind it, and then offer ideas for how the rule might apply to our daily lives, especially at work and school. The brain is complex, and I am taking only slivers of information from each subject—not comprehensive but, I hope, accessible.

Here is a sampling of the ideas you’ll encounter:

• We are not used to sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. From an evolutionary perspective, our brains developed while we walked or ran as many as 12 miles a day. The brain still craves this experience. That’s why exercise boosts brain power (Brain Rule #2) in sedentary populations like our own. Exercisers outperform couch potatoes in long-term memory, reasoning, attention, and problem solving tasks.

• As you no doubt have noticed if you’ve ever sat through a typical PowerPoint presentation, people don’t pay attention to boring things (Brain Rule #6). You’ve got seconds to grab someone’s attention and only 10 minutes to keep it. At 9 minutes and 59 seconds, you must do something to regain attention and restart the clock—something emotional and relevant. Also, the brain needs a break. That’s why I use stories in this book to make many of my points.

Ever feel tired about three o’clock in the afternoon? That’s because your brain really wants to take a nap. You might be more productive if you did. In one study, a 26-minute nap improved NASA pilots’ performance by 34 percent. And whether you get enough rest at night affects your mental agility the next day. Sleep well, think well (Brain Rule #3).

• We’ll meet a man who can remember everything he reads after seeing the words just once. Most of us do more forgetting than remembering, of course, and that’s why we must repeat to remember (Brain Rule #7). When you understand the brain’s rules for memory, you’ll see why I want to destroy the notion of homework.

• We’ll find out why the terrible twos only look like active rebellion but actually are a child’s powerful urge to explore. Babies may not have a lot of knowledge about the world, but they know a whole lot about how to get it. We are powerful and natural explorers (Brain Rule #12). This never leaves us, despite the artificial environments we’ve built for ourselves.

What we know about the brain comes from biologists who study brain tissues, experimental psychologists who study behavior, cognitive neuroscientists who study how the first relates to the second, and evolutionary biologists. Though we know precious little about how the brain works, our evolutionary history tells us this: The brain appears to be designed to (1) solve problems (2) related to surviving (3) in an unstable outdoor environment, and (4) to do so in nearly constant motion. I call this the brain’s performance envelope. Each subject in this book—exercise, sleep, stress, wiring, attention, memory, sensory integration, vision, music, gender, and exploration—relates to this performance envelope. We were in motion, getting lots of exercise. Environmental instability led to the extremely flexible way our brains are wired, allowing us to solve problems through exploration. To survive in the great outdoors, we
needed to learn from our mistakes. That meant paying attention to certain things at the expense of others, and it meant creating memories in a particular way. Though we have been stuffing them into classrooms and cubicles for decades, our brains actually were built to survive in jungles and grasslands. We have not outgrown this.

Because we don’t fully understand how our brains work, we do dumb things. We try to talk on our cell phones and drive at the same time, even though it is literally impossible for our brains to multitask when it comes to paying attention. We have created high-stress office environments, even though a stressed brain is significantly less productive than a non-stressed brain. Our schools are designed so that most real learning has to occur at home. Taken together, what do the studies in this book show? Mostly this: If you wanted to create an education environment that was directly opposed to what the brain was good at doing, you probably would design something like a classroom. If you wanted to create a business environment that was directly opposed to what the brain was good at doing, you probably would design something like a cubicle. And if you wanted to change things, you might have to tear down both and start over.

Blame it on the fact that brain scientists rarely have a conversation with teachers and business professionals, education majors and accountants, superintendents and CEOs. Unless you have the Journal of Neuroscience sitting on your coffee table, you’re out of the loop.

This book is meant to get you into the loop.

Why is a book on the brain in the top 25 of Amazon's leadership books?
By Amazon Customer
I believe personal productivity and performance as a leader are directly correlated. Just like we have to lead a team, we have to lead ourselves to a higher level of a productivity and effectiveness. In all of the leadership classes I teach, emphasis is placed on knowing yourself. When you know yourself it provides you the ability to adapt to weaknesses and leverage your strengths (increase your personal productivity and effectiveness).

Knowing how your brain functions is part of knowing yourself.

This book is so insightful and valuable that I sent copies to my clients. The value of the book hinges on the understanding of the brain and how it works which allows me to leverage that knowledge for increased personal productivity and in my interactions and relationships with others.

Myth Busters for the brain!

The book is a fairly easy read because the author uses stories to illustrate the functionality of the brain. This book is not a "leadership-lite" book filled with cute and truthful antidotes, but a book with hard science communicated in an interesting way. Dr. John J. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist. He also shares what scientists don't know about how the brain works!

This book gave me many, many take-aways and here are just six ...

I. Some parts of the brain are just like a baby's and can grow new connections and strengthen existing connections. We have the ability to learn new things our entire life. Medina states this was "not the prevailing notion until 5 or 6 years ago." So much for the "you can't teach and old dog new tricks excuse." The old dog line is exposed for what it really is...an excuse.

II. Humans can only pay attention for about ten minutes and then need some kind of reset.

III. The brain can only focus on one thing at a time. This is further rationale on the futility of multi-tasking.

IV. Exercise increases brain power and aerobic exercise twice a week reduces the risk of general dementia by 50% and Alzheimer's by 60%.

V. There is a biological need for an afternoon nap.

VI. The brain is very active during sleep and loss of sleep hurts cognitive and physical ability.

Buy and read Brain Rules. It will benefit you.

One of the reasons I read leadership books is to learn new things but also to get old truths hammered into my thick skull so they result in action. Action! So you may know or have heard of some of the truths in "Brain Rules" but I guarantee the author brings them to you in a unique an interesting way with solid depth that will allow you to easier implement those truths into how you handle yourself and others on a daily basis.

A great overview of both findings in neuroscience as well as practical ways to apply them in everyday life
By Michael Schmatz
John splits the book up into twelve different sections, each with findings in neuroscience, as well as how to apply those findings practically. These sections are

Survival: How our brain is a product of our evolution, and some traits it has adopted as a result
Exercise: How exercise improves our cognitive abilities and staves off dementia
Sleep: What the brain does during sleep, how people are biologically predisposed to various sleep patterns, and how to use naps to improve performance
Stress: The various biochemicals involved with stress and how to have less stressful relationships and life
Wiring: How neurons interact, develop, and function
Attention: How multitasking works (or doesn't work), the relationship between emotion and attention, and the need for relaxation to enhance focus
Memory: How memory formation works and the optimal way to remember things
Sensory Integration: How all of the senses work together to provide a cohesive experience, and how multiple senses can be utilized to improve learning
Vision: How vision trumps all of the other senses and can be used to create more effective presentations
Music: How music can cause improvements in cognition, be therapeutic, and how music training can improve cognition
Gender: Differences between the genders in physiology, socialization, emotional reactions, and memory.
Exploration: How the brain is constantly exploring and looking for novel things

A lot of reviewers have pointed out that many of the tips that John gives are common sense - that may be true. However, I found that knowing the neuroscience behind many of the things which John advocates ensures their adoption into day-to-day life.

Overall, a great read that has caused me to change the way I give presentations, how much I exercise and sleep, as well as how I interact with people.

Fascinating look at the space between your ears, as well as practical application...
By Thomas Duff
When an author and industry expert you hold in high regard says a book is the best one s/he's read in 2008, it's probably a good idea to take notice. So when Garr Reynolds of Presentation Zen fame recommended Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina, I decided that should be something I get sooner rather than later. After reading, I can see why he recommends the book so highly. Medina's 12 "brain rules" are based on solid science, but they're presented in such a way that you can actually apply your new-found knowledge.

Contents:
Exercise - Rule #1: Exercise boosts brain power.
Survival - Rule #2: The human brain evolved, too.
Wiring - Rule #3: Every brain is wired differently.
Attention - Rule #4: We don't pay attention to boring things.
Short-Term Memory - Rule #5: Repeat to remember.
Long-Term Memory - Rule #6: Remember to repeat.
Sleep - Rule #7: Sleep well, think well.
Stress - Rule #8: Stressed brains don't learn the same way.
Sensory Integration - Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses.
Vision - Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses.
Gender - Rule #11: Male and female brains are different.
Exploration - Rule #12: We are powerful and natural explorers.

When Reynolds reviewed the book on his site, he focused on how these rules pertain to the art of making presentations. Attention, as explained by Medina, means that the brain does not multitask (much to your bosses dismay), we notice patterns and abstract meanings better than recording detail, and you have basically 10 minutes before the audience checks out without a new stimulus. Vision, the sensory "trump card", is the dominant sense, our brain controls what we see (and it's not totally correct), the processes to "see" something are very complex, and most importantly, we remember and learn best through pictures and not written/spoken words. That one insight alone should be enough to make you totally rethink the way we attempt to present to people...

Now, even if you're not approaching the book from a presentation angle, the book is still outstanding. Something like memory, an act we take for granted, is a deep mystery that we still don't understand. Medina shows by studies and real-life examples how things *might* work, knowing full well we haven't even begun to understand but a fraction of what goes on there. Sleep, something that boosts brain power, is *not* a time of relaxation for the brain. In fact, it often kicks into overdrive. Why? There are still no definitive answers. But he does go on to prove how *lack* of sleep can utterly render you incapable of rational thought and physical action. When you've worked through all 12 of the brain rules, you'll have a more complete understanding of how you can affect the quality of your brain functioning, all the while being entertained and amazed at what lies between your ears.

Every time I got to the end of a chapter, I started to put the book down. But then I'd think "just one more and then I'll turn out the light." Needless to say, I was at the end before I knew it. Like Garr Reynolds, this is one of the best books I've read this year, and one that I'd recommend to others for a number of reasons and purposes.
