He consides the aesthetic, technological, and social advances that accompany the progress of the Estado Novo---Futurism; the development of sound film; the inception of national radio broadcast; access to the automobile; and urban renewal---within a historical context that considers Portugal's global profile at the time of António de Oliveira Salazar's rise to power and the inauguration of António Ferro's Secretariado da Propaganda Nacional [Ministry of National Propaganda]; Portugal's role as a secret ally of the Falange during the Spanish Civil War; Lisbon's role as aneutral refuge during World War II; and the Portuguese Colonial Empire as an anachronism in the post-World War II years. Colvin argues that Portuguese directors have exploited the growing popularity of the Fado and Lisbon's fadistas to dissuade citizens from alien values that promote individual ambitions and the notion of an easy life of poverty in the Capital. As the public image of the Fado evolves, the fadista's role in film becomes more prominentand eventually,the fadista is the protagonist and the Fado, the principal concern of national film. The author exposes the irony that as the social profile of the Lisbon fadista improves with the international fame of singer Amália Rodrigues, Portuguese film perpetuates and validates the outdated characterization of the fadista as a social pariah that Leito de Barros had proposed in the first Portuguese talkie, A Severa (1931).

Interesting academic investigation

Fado was often used and misused in various political and ideological contexts in Portugal. This book explores extensively the legacy of fado films in Portuguese popular culture. The aim is outlining the urban culture and its expressions, as well as the social messages. Interestingly, it draws comparisons between the fado culture and the later graffiti works, both the artistic expressions of marginalized social categories. It also identifies the current genesis of fado imagology in the present-times, particularly through advertising and cultural representations. The argumentation is solid and the references academically proved. An interesting book for scholars interested in the history of mentalities as well as in understanding Portuguese film and urban culture.

About the Author

Michael C. Thomsett is the author of more than 80 books, including many FT Press projects (Stock Profits: Getting to the Core, Put Option Strategies, The Options Trading Body of Knowledge, Options Trading for the Conservative Investor, Options Trading for the Institutional Investor, and Trading with Candlesticks). He also has written several other books on the topics of technical analysis, candlesticks, and options trading. Thomsett is the cofounder of the education site ThomsettOptions.com, where he manages a virtual portfolio emphasizing technical analysis and candlestick charting as required trading skills; there, he has executed trades using the system explained in Profiting from Technical Analysis and Candlestick Indicators. It's a pretty good book . The only thing I didn't really like about this book is this I had to go the dictionary to find out the meaning of a few words . Lol !

Muhammad A.Moniem started in the industry at a very early age. He taught himself everything related to the game development process even before he joined college. After being a software engineer, he started to teach himself the art of game design and game art techniques. As a self-taught person, he was able to find his way into the industry very easily, which led him to be hired for big, medium, and small companies, titles, and teams. Throughout his career, he was able to contribute as a full-time or part-time employee or freelancer to games for a wide range of platforms, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, PS4, Xbox One, and OUYA. He has also worked with technologies, such as VR, AR, and Kinect. Finally, he was able to establish his own one-person game company/team as a part-time independent developer. A lot of his indie games got recognition or have been finalists at international indie game events, such as IGF, Indie Showcase, IGC, and Tokyo Game Show. About the Author

Bruce Alberts received his PhD from Harvard University and is Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is the editor-in-chief of Science magazine. For 12 years he served as President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1993-2005).

Dennis Bray received his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is currently an active emeritus professor at University of Cambridge. In 2006 he was awarded the Microsoft European Science Award.

Karen Hopkin received her PhD in biochemistry from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is a science writer in Somerville, Massachusetts. She is a regular columnist for The Scientist and a contributor to Scientific American's daily podcast, "60-Second Science."

Alexander Johnson received his PhD from Harvard University and is Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology Graduate Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

Julian Lewis received his DPhil from the University of Oxford and is an Emeritus Scientist at the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK.

Martin Raff received his MD from McGill University and is at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology and Cell Biology Unit at University College London.

Keith Roberts received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and was Deputy Director of the John Innes Centre, Norwich. He is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia.

A perfect introductory textbook to molecular cell biology!

I recently bought the book "Essential Cell Biology: An Introduction to the Molecular Biology of the Cell" and studied it from cover to cover, including all the questions and answers. It was one of the greatest and most well-organized textbooks I have ever encountered. The language was very fluent, and especially some of the example questions were quite entertaining and witty. I haven't had any education neither in biology nor in molecular biology nor in biochemistry (my major is chemical engineering), still I didn't have any difficulties in understanding all the concepts presented in the book. The knowledge I gained from the book was a great help to me during the "GRE Subject Test in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology" which I took just yesterday. I am applying to graduate schools in the US for a Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology or Bioengineering, and the test I took yesterday was crucial for my applications, in which (thanks to Essential Cell Biology) I believe I did quite well for a person without a background in the subject except a two-months-long self-study. This is a great and concise introductory textbook to the molecular biology of the cell, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this subject with no or little background.

Cell Biology's little brother

I was desperately looking for a textbook to cover the Biochemistry and Cell Biology for the GRE Subject Test i am preparing for.

Everyone was praising Alberts' Cell Biology but i found the information a bit advanced.
Cell Biology is a FANTASTIC textbook but it requires prior background on Cell Biology to fully appreciate it and i had none.

Then i found Essential Cell Biology. By the same author, it partners with others in bringing Cell Biology to a wider audience. Reading it is a breeze, it makes you wonder why Cell Biology is considered such a hard topic!
Explanations are straight forward and the movies that come with the DVD are a life saver.

You can easily read and assimilate 10 pages an hour and you don't even know when the time passes.
The only chapters that require more time are "How cells obtain energy from food" and "Electron transport in mitochondria". But this is because of the chemical reactions implied by processes such as citric acid and glycolysis.

Don't get fooled! Essential Cell Biology covers ALL chapters that his big brother Cell Biology includes. It only does it in a simpler and wiser manner.

If you want to get acquainted with Cell Biology this is the book for you!

A good basic text for non-majors

This is the "Baby Alberts," a condensed version of "Molecular Biology of the Cell by the same authors. It covers the basic premises well and the reader will not get bogged down in details that will only be useful to a senior student or graduate student. The CD that comes with it has some very nice videos and a few good animations of cell processes but it is not anywhere near as useful as the HyperCell 1998 CD, which has animations and explanations of all cell processes (Also from Garland Publishing). If you plan to make cell and molecular biology your major or career, however, you will be much better off buying the more comprehensive book; it has everything that is in this book and way beyond. It may save you money because you will probably buy it in the future anyway!
