The Portable Atheist: Essential Readings for the NonbelieverFrom Hitchens, Christopher (EDT)

From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of God Is Not Great, a provocative and entertaining guided tour of atheist and agnostic thought through the ages--with never-before-published pieces by Salman Rushdie, Ian McEwan, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali.Christopher Hitchens continues to make the case for a splendidly godless universe in this first-ever gathering of the influential voices--past and present--that have shaped his side of the current (and raging) God/no-god debate. With Hitchens as your erudite and witty guide, you’ll be led through a wealth of philosophy, literature, and scientific inquiry, including generous portions of the words of Lucretius, Benedict de Spinoza, Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Mark Twain, George Eliot, Bertrand Russell, Emma Goldman, H. L. Mencken, Albert Einstein, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and many others well-known and lesser known. And they’re all set in context and commented upon as only Christopher Hitchens--“political and literary journalist extraordinaire” (Los Angeles Times)--can. Atheist? Believer? Uncertain? No matter: The Portable Atheist will speak to you and engage you every step of the way.

From Publishers Weekly
Hitchens, an avowed atheist and author of the bestseller God Is Not Great, is a formidable intellectual who finds the notion of belief in God to be utter nonsense. The author is clear in his introduction that religion has caused more than its fair share of world problems. "Religion invents a problem where none exists by describing the wicked as also made in the image of god and the sexually nonconformist as existing in a state of incurable mortal sin that can incidentally cause floods and earthquakes." The readings Hitchens chooses to bolster his atheist argument are indeed engaging and important. Hobbes, Spinoza, Mill and Marx are some of the heavyweights representing a philosophical viewpoint. From the world of literature the author assembles excerpts from Shelley, Twain, Conrad, Orwell and Updike. All are enjoyable to read and will make even religious believers envious of the talent gathered for this anthology. What these dynamic writers are railing against often enough, however, is a strawman: an immature, fundamentalist, outdated, and even embarrassing style of religion that many intelligent believers have long since cast off. It could be that Hitchens and his cast of nonbelievers are preaching to the choir and their message is tired and spent. However, this remains a fascinating collection of readings from some of the West’s greatest thinkers.

The best anthology of atheism I've come across
By J. Benishek
The Portable Atheist, edited by Christopher Hitchens, is a great selection of how atheism has transformed into what it is today. Hitchens' introduction itself is an astounding tour de force that should not be skipped. In his introduction alone, Hitchen's lays out the foundation and positive attributes of atheism. This is crucial as many people have the common misunderstanding that atheists are pessimists or discontented. He also makes the genuinely important point that in order to believe in one of the three major monotheisms, you have to believe that the heavens watched our species for at least one hundred and fifty thousand years with "indifference, and then- and only in the last six thousand years at the very least - decided that it was time to intervene as well as redeem." He concedes that it is preposterous to believe such a heinous thing - for it would be cruel if true. His introduction is intelligent, convincing and witty - and it doesn't stop there.

The selections in this book show the evolution of atheism (or at least nontheism) from early critics of religion such as: Benedict De Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes and David Hume to more of a middle stage (Darwin, George Eliot, Mark Twain and Bertrand Russell) and then to modern-day critics like: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Steven Weinberg, Daniel Dennett, Carl Sagan, Victor Stenger, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and many more. Another great thing is the book is helpfully arranged in chronological order. All beliefs aside, the selections in this book are powerfully argued and well written. I'd recommend it to anyone with a hunger for the truth and an open mind.

Pulls together some terrific sources.
By Saganite
Christopher "Hitch" Hitchens is the literate jackanapes of the New Atheism, an unofficial affiliation that includes Richard Dawkins, Dan Dennett, Sam Harris, A.C. Grayling, Victor Stenger, PZ Myers, and others. Hitch once quipped that Dawkins had been invited, along with him, to present atheism so that the audience could also get a more moderate view of the position. (If you don't know why that's funny, read Dawkins's "The God Delusion," which is uncompromisingly immoderate.) Hitch's book, "god is Not Great" cemented his reputation as the Sweeney Todd of antitheism, for whom words are razors and arrogant ignorance is the prey. This was the guy, after all, who several years ago wrote a slashing diatribe against Mother Teresa.

The introduction that Hitchens writes for this volume is just excellent. Funny, barbed, witty...a real showcase of his rhetorical skill. And the selections made for this book are uniformly excellent. It's easy to quibble that this should have been included or that could have been left out, but on the whole, this volume represents a compendium of some of the best literature in atheology. From Hume to Penn Jillette, Hobbes to Salman Rushdie, some of the most brilliant, sharpest criticisms of the notion of gods and the practices of religion are represented.

I know too many believers to think that something as mere as reading a great many genius writers making mountains of sense could change their minds; but certainly this tome presents a substantial challenge to easy assumptions, and a buffet banquet for thought. It is a tribute to this book that it winds up on the favorites lists of several bloggers, including one who defines himself as a "secular Catholic Buddhist": [...]

The Portable Atheist-The Perfect Pocket Defense Against Irrationality
By Samuel Edwin Fry Jr.
In a world being swamped with 6000-year earth age advocates and mind-numbing religious attacks on science, with some U.S. presidential candidates in the lead, The Portable Atheist is an island of sanity and respite from irrationality and the unending barrage of misinformation from "believers". From the Taliban to the fundamentalist and evangelical command posts, whether on "Christian" TV and radio or the minaret, temple, or store front hotbeds, common sense, science, and rational thinking have never been so daily assaulted. Revel in the words of those who have fought the good fight against Bronze Age morality and intellectual dysfunction. The Portable Atheist is a companion you will want by your side. Great reading, instructive, and, most of all, provides hope that clear thinking might just have a chance.

I Love You Madly: Marie-Antoinette and Count Fersen: The Secret Letters, by Evelyn Farr

Delve deeper into the world of the BBC hit drama series Versailles, and discover the real Marie-Antoinette in this ground-breaking study of her secret love affair with the Swedish diplomat Count Axel von Fersen. For the first time an historian has compiled all the known letters between Swedish count Axel von Fersen and Marie-Antoinette, including six letters never before published. With unprecedented access to French and Swedish archives, Evelyn Farr has proven beyond doubt one of history's greatest romances. Axel von Fersen was Queen Marie-Antoinette's lover and loyal counsellor who gave her political advice from 1785 to the fall of the French monarchy at the time of the French Revolution. He organized the Royal Family's escape from Paris in 1791. Evelyn Farr's revelatory work on the subject also goes some way to proving that Count Fersen was in fact the biological father of Marie Antoinette's two younger children. Farr unveils the logistics and practicalities behind the romance; the use of code and invisible ink, the role of intermediaries, secret seals, double envelopes, codenames and the location of Fersen's clandestine lodgings at Versailles. I Love You Madly is a meticulously researched and enjoyable study of a forbidden love at a time of revolution. The letters portray a rebellious and independent queen who risked everything and broke all the rules to love the man who succeeded in conquering her heart.

Review
"Colin Imber has expanded and updated his masterly survey of the Ottoman state down to the mid-seventeenth century to take account of important recent developments in the field, and to add a lucid account of the labyrinthine Ottoman taxation system. He has produced a valuable and informative study which manages to combine real in-depth insights into the institutions and the remarkably 'other' power structures of the Ottoman empire with an vigorous and often pithy style which wears its learning lightly. A must for all actual and wanna-be Ottomanists." -- Colin Heywood, University of Hull, UK

"Colin Imber's book remains the best overview of the early Ottoman institutions. The updates and the addition of a new chapter on taxation make it even better." -- Gabor Agoston, Georgetown University, USA, co-author of the Encyclopedia of the Ottoman Empire.

A good introduction to the institutions of the Ottoman state
By MarkK
For the past thirty-six years, readers seeking an introduction to the Ottoman empire have turned to Halil Inalcik's classic The Ottoman Empire: The Classical Age 1300-1600. Written by the dean of Ottoman history, it provided an overview of its history and an examination of its components that has stood the test of time. Over the three and a half decades since its publication, however, a wealth of new scholarship has emerged that has refined and developed our knowledge. The fruits of this can be seen in Colin Imber's study, one that treads much of the same ground as Inalcik but does so with the benefit of an additional generation of study.

The layout of Imber's book is similar to that of Inalcik's (which Imber helped translate); an initial section chronicling the political and military history of the period followed by chapters providing an analytical overview of various aspects of the empire. But whereas Inalcik's book provided a broad-ranging survey that included its cultural and religious elements, Imber focuses more narrowly on the institutions of state: the palace, the bureaucracy, and the military. This allows him to provide a more detailed examination of the military state, one that describes its development and shows how it both conquered and governed the lands of three continents.

Clearly written and well grounded in the literature of the field, Imber's book is a detailed and up-to-date account of the factors underpinning Ottoman power in the first centuries of its existence. Anyone seeking an introduction to the Ottoman empire would do well to start with it. With its concentration on imperial institutions and its closer examination of such things as the Ottoman navy (which has received far more scholarly attention in recent decades than it had when Inalcik wrote his book), it complements rather than replaces Inalcik's longstanding survey, providing readers with a good foundation for exploring in more detail the last and greatest of the Muslim empires.

Not quite
By Big A
I have been using this work as one of my references for a series of talks I will be giving on early Ottoman society and ideals. I could just as well have used Inalcik or even Shaw, but I thought Imber's approach promising. Well, it hasn't worked out too well as I've had to go outside on almost every topic. I think Inalcik remains the most sound as well as prolific authority on the Ottomans. Unfortunately not everything he has written is in English and you need to have a very very good knowledge of Turkish to fully appreciate what he is saying. OK, to come back to the work at hand. The content of Imber's book reminds me of all those ultimately boring Ottoman histories written by run of the mill Turkish historians, which essentially repeat what the sources reveal - albeit through the prism of historical methodology.

Let's take two examples. First, the Ottoman military; although Imber spends a lot of time on this it does not come anywhere near Murphey's "Ottoman Warfare 1500-1700" or Uyar and Erickson's "A Military History of the Ottomans", both of which are excellent because they are also eye-openers. They get right down to the heart of the matter. Following on from that thought, and secondly, there is the still much discussed question of what was Turkic, Persian or Greek about Ottoman institutions. Kafadar has written an excellent review with regard to the founding of the Ottoman Empire, "Between Two Worlds", which given Gibb's, Wittek's and Köprülü's previous unresolved works on this issue remains relevant for the whole. To get specific; even Sproyanis Jr. accepts that despite the resemblance between the Ottoman grants of taxes due from land and those of the Byzantines, this solution for financing militaries was used also by the Abbasids, from whom the Buyids took it (and developed it) and from whom the Great Seljuqs developed it even further - effectively into the final form it had under the Ottomans, who got it from the Seljuqs of Rum. It is what Imber overlooks in coming to the view that the Ottoman timar was based on the Byzantine pronoia that makes my point. This is that the Ottomans hardly ever changed what they found if it fitted in with their expectations. So much so that even on Imber's admission they retained not only the dynastic names of the principalities they absorbed into their empire but also the dynasties - at least until they petered out or rebelled and so on and so forth. The Seljuqs of Rum did the same with the names of urban centres. So it is not surprising that the Ottomans retained many of the terms that described the cadastral entities they took over, adding a few of their own over time.

In short, although I thought Imber's structure promising, I have found the content of his book somewhat pedestrian, particularly when compared to Inalcik's and more specific works and papers on the Ottomans. As this is the revised edition, I think a great opportunity has been missed in giving us an inside to outside look at the Ottomans.

Very good narrative of the Ottoman Empire
By Vineyard
The book is unusual, for me at least, in its style. It has a flowing narrative, unlike many history books in academia, while containing many valuable references for most of the significant events and people. I got a sense of the chess power play that prevailed in the Balkans for almost a century before the Ottomans conquered it. All this information almost inexistent in most of the history books of the Balkan countries which, in my opinion, even today suffer from a national-romantic tone of the 19th century portraying the Ottomans as a dark chapter in their history that destroyed their otherwise earthly paradise.

The book also offers insights on the judicial and military organization of the empire and where the source of this organization came from. It combines cultural influences from Turkic, Arab, and Persian world, together with the presence of a former empire (Byzantium), offering a blend of rational explanations.

It is a book that I am going to read again.

How stereotypes affect us and what can be done about it
By Coert Visser
This book by social psychologist and Columbia University provost, Claude Steele, is a splendid example of how psychologists can make valuable contributions to society. In the book, Steele writes about the work he and his colleagues have done on a phenomenon called stereotype threat, the tendency to expect, perceive, and be influenced by negative stereotypes about one's social category, such as one's age, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, profession, nationality, political affiliation, mental health status, and so on.

Experiments demonstrating the impact of stereotype threat
When trying to understand certain performance gaps between groups, Steele and his colleagues did not focus on internal psychological factors.. Instead, they tried to understand the possible causal role of identity contingencies, the things you have to deal with in a situation because you have a given social identity. Over the years they carried out a series of creative experiments* in which there was a control condition in which a task was given under normal conditions life. In the experimental condition, the identity contingency was either cleverly removed or it was deliberately induced. Here are three examples of experiments to clarify how they worked.

Experiment 1: Steele and Aronson (1995)
In this experiment the researchers had African American and white college students take a very challenging standardized test. In the control condition, the test was presented as these tests are always presented - as a measure of intellectual ability. This condition contained the stereotype that African Americans would be less intelligent. In the experimental condition the test was presented in a non-evaluative way. The test takers were told that the researchers were not interested in measuring their ability with the test but that they just wanted to use the test to examine the psychology of verbal problem solving. In the control condition, the African American test takers, on average, scored much lower than the white test takers. For the white test takers there was no difference in their scores between the control condition and the experimental condition. For the African American test takers there was a big difference between the control condition and the experimental condition. They solved about twice as many problems on the test in the experimental condition. Moreover, there was no difference between the performance of the black test takers and the white test takers.

Experiment 2: Aronson, Lustina, Good, Keough, Steele & Brown (1999)
In this experiment, the researchers asked highly competent white males to take a difficult math test. In the control condition the test was taken normally. In the experimental condition, the researchers told the test takers that one of their reasons for doing the research was to understand why Asians seemed to perform better on these tests. Thus, they artificially created a stereotype threat. In the experimental condition, the test takers solved significantly fewer of the problems on the test and felt less confident about their performance.

Experiment 3: Shih, Pittinsky & Ambady (1999)
In this experiment, a difficult math test was given to Asian women under three conditions. In condition one, they were subtly reminded of their Asian identity, in condition 2 they were subtly reminded of their female identity. In the control condition they were not reminded of their identity. The women reminded of their Asianness performed better than the control group, whereas those reminded of their female identity performed worse than the control group.

How does stereotype threat harm performance?
Today, research on stereotype threat effects is done throughout the world by many researchers. Much insight has been gained into what it is and how it works. Briefly, you know your group identity and you know how society views it. You are aware that you are doing a task for which that view is relevant. You know, at some level, that you are in a predicament: your performance could confirm a bad view of your group and of yourself as a member of that group. You may not consciously feel anxious but your blood pressure rises and you begin to sweat. Your thinking changes. Your mind starts to race: you become vigilant to all things relevant to the threat and to what your chances of avoiding it are. The book title comes from an observed behavior: an African American whistling Vivaldi to make clear that certain stereotypes attached to the group don't apply. You get some self-doubts and start to worry about how warranted the stereotype may be. You start to constantly monitor how well you are doing. You try hard to suppress threatening thoughts about not doing well or about the negative consequences of possibly failing. While you are having all of these thoughts you are distracted from the task at hand and your concentration and working memory suffer.

Does it always happen? No. There is only one prerequisite for stereotype threat to happen: the person in question must care about the performance in question. The fear of confirming the negative stereotype then becomes upsetting enough to interfere with performance. It is now known that stereotype has the strongest negative impact when people are highly motivated and performing at the frontier of their skills.

Solutions: bridging performance gaps through small interventions
Can something be done about it? Yes. The promising news is that there are some rather small interventions which can help a lot. Experiments have shown that subtly removing or preventing stereotype threats can completely or largely eliminate performance gaps between stereotyped groups and non-stereotyped groups.

Examples of helpful interventions are:
- Make it clear in the way you give critical feedback that you use high standards and let the person know that you expect him or her to be able to eventually succeed.
- Improve the number of people from the social category in the setting so that a critical mass is reached.
- Make it clear that you value diversity.
- Foster inter-group conversations and frame these as a learning experience.
- Allow the stereotyped individuals to use self-affirmations.
- Help the stereotyped individuals to develop a narrative about the setting that explains their frustrations while projecting positive engagement and success in the setting.

Conclusion
The tone of the book is informal, friendly, and personal, and the content is profound. The topic is highly relevant both to the development of social psychology and to the development of our educational systems and societies at large. Of course it also can inspire positive psychology research: how have certain individuals managed to overcome stereotype threat, how do certain organizations manage to bridge performance gaps, how do societies manage to do the same?

How Stereotypes Can Affect Us Even When We Are Not Actively Being Stereotyped!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
While this is a book of social science, it is somewhat of an autobiography of psychologist Claude Steele and his quest to understand something puzzling. Steele was concerned that black students who had done well in high school went to college and suddenly were not doing well. It wasn't that they weren't smart, probably wasn't that they weren't putting in the effort, so what could it be? He had an idea: what if people who are stereotyped don't do well in part because the stereotype they know (or think) exists about them causes them, affects their performance? What if black students who have heard the stereotype that black students are not as smart as white students end up performing less well than white students solely because the stereotype affects their performance?

And thus began his and others' quest to discover the ins and outs of the, now quite well documented, existence of stereotype threats. In some studies, they had black students take a test, where one group was told that the test was a gauge of intelligence (to induce thought of the stereotype) and the other group was told something more innocuous, like, that the test was to study how people solve problems. The second group - the group not performing under stereotype threat. Another test had white students shooting hoops: one group was told that they were testing people's skill at basketball (to induce stereotype threat) and another, that they were testing people's throwing style. Again, the group not under stereotype threat did better. More persuasively, Steele recounts another study where Asian girls took a math test. One group was reminded that Asians are historically good at math, and another that girls and women are historically not as good at math. Not surprisingly (to Steele), the former group did better than the latter. Same girls, different stereotype.

But Steele's book doesn't just recount studies. He gets into the question of why we stereotype (even when we don't mean to), how identity is constructed and how stereotypes (that others have) makes up part of a person's identity, and even offers some very apolitical suggestions for how we can try and lessen the effects of stereotypes. Some suggestions are just common sense: when you know that you have a stereotype of a group, go out of your way from time to time to act in the way opposite from what the stereotype would tell you to do. Another - probably most relevant for teachers and parents - is to tell students who might be affected by stereotype threat to look at the stereotype as a challenge (show them that you can do the math!) rather than as a limit to what you can do.

All in all, I liked this book quite a bit. Steele takes a topic that could be very charged and sensitive and makes it a bit less so. He suggests that EVERYONE is susceptible both to holding stereotypes and stereotype threat. Steele's organization of the book along the lines of an autobiographical (and chronological) story of how he came to the idea of stereotype threat and how he and others have tested it is also very effective.

A must read for teachers, managers
By W. Stanley
This book carefully and convincingly builds an evidenced-based argument for how societal stereotypes, and the fears we all have of confirming negative stereotypes about our own social group, can affect how we behave and, most importantly, how we perform on crucial tasks. Steele demonstrates convincingly that some of the standard advice that members of disadvantaged groups receive (often from parents), such as to just work harder, can actually be detrimental. He also shows that comparatively small changes in institutional settings, or in how tasks or challenging situations are presented, can largely or entirely eliminate the stereotype threat and its impact on performance. I found the book inspiring, and I know it will change the way that I present tasks and feedback to students and family members. As a social scientist, I was extremely impressed by the way Steele and his colleagues at several institutions have built this research program, one small increment a time, resulting in a revolutionary whole.

Given the emphasis in this book on pre-exam treatments and institutional interventions (having test-takers identify their gender AFTER an Advanced Placement exam, for instance), I couldn't help wondering if there are techniques that individuals can use for themselves. Cognitive therapy, after all, works not the basis of individuals' changing their self-talk, abandoning counterproductive beliefs, etc. If an individual can learn to, for example, care less about what other people think or be less worried about social embarrassment, can stereotype threats be reduced? One finding mentioned in the book is that if a white person is prompted to view a social interaction with a black person as a learning experience, the white person is less likely to engage in avoidance behaviors that are based on fear of saying the wrong thing. What if the "treatment" isn't a prompt from an experimenter, but a deliberate change in thinking on the part of individuals faced with identity contingencies?

Almost Interesting, by David Spade

A hilarious and biting memoir from the actor, comedian and Saturday Night Live alumni David Spade.

David Spade is best known for his harsh “Hollywood” Minute Sketches on SNL, his starring roles in movies like Joe Dirt and Tommy Boy,  and his seven-year stint as Dennis Finch on the series Just Shoot Me. Now, with a wit as dry as the weather in his home state of Arizona, the “comic brat extraordinaire” tells his story in Almost Interesting.

First Taking fans back to his childhood as a wannabe cool younger brother and recounting his excruciating road-tour to fame—when he was regularly mistaken for a ten year-old, Spade then dishes about his time crisscrossing the country as a comedian, for low-paying gigs and dragging along his mother’s old suitcase full of props. He also covers his years on SNL during the beloved Rock/Sandler/Farley era of the 1990s, including his close working relationship and friendship with Chris Farley and brags about the ridiculous perks that fame has brought into his life, including the constant fear of being fired, a crazy ex-assistant who attacked him while he was sleeping, a run-in with Eddie Murphy on the mean streets of Beverly Hills, and of course an endless supply of hot chicks.

Sometimes dirty, always funny, and as sharp as a tack, Almost Interesting reminds you why David Spade is one of our generation’s favorite funny guys.

David Spade is Almost Interesting

This is my memoir . . . . It’s me telling you about my fake problems in life and a few real ones. It’s a book about comedy, and how I came up from the dusty roads of Arizona with my OP shorts and my blond fluffy hair, to the mean streets of Beverly Hills, with nothing but a few props in my mom’s old honeymoon suitcase and a couple of dry jokes.

These are the stories I tell my friends at dinner when I’m drunk, and they dart their eyes around hoping a waiter will interrupt me.

Me blabbering on about how I lost my virginity, how I got into stand-up, meeting Johnny Carson, making Tommy Boy with Farlz, and getting beat up while wearing a Coneheads T-shirt. Sound stupid? Maybe! Read and find out.

Good read despite an unwelcome left turn.
By Pen Name
This was a funny and casually well-written book, a good read But it's a little frustrating because it abandons the "narrative," if you will, without finishing it. The first 2/3 of the book deal with Spade's upbringing, his grind through the comedy club scene, and his slow climb from SNL writer to SNL performer. Even though it's written with a light touch, that stuff is all pretty compelling. But it drops that thread after he's made it as an SNL cast member. It doesn't tell the story of what prompted him to leave SNL, or his movie career (except for Tommy Boy), or his experience on sitcoms. Instead, the last 1/3 of the book morphs into more of a George Carlin "Brain Droppings" type thing -- little observational essays on miscellaneous topics ranging from doing cocaine to his thoughts on dating tricks that women pull. I would have been really interested to hear why he made the jump from SNL when he did (given how hard his climb there was) and whether he's happy or not with his sitcom and movie work. The guy writes so well and so honestly about his career that I certainly could have read a lot more of it. But still, this is an entertaining read and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes a fun, self-aware memoir.

but I love David Spade
By KatComputer
but I love David Spade. Love that he's acerbic, love that he seems somewhat shy but he's really inside his head thinking 'What the hell?' all the time...love that he is like the younger brother that constantly looks out for everyone even though everyone is older and should know better...
This isn't a show-stopper book. That doesn't seem to be his style. This is a nice read, about a nice boy, that made it thru some rough stuff, and now his life is nice again. Kudos to your life, David Spade!

Weak sauce
By J. D. Piatt
I really enjoyed Spade on SNL, so this was a must have book.
He was there when it was really hopping and firing on all cylinders.
The book is mildly interesting on his early years, and how he really struggled to make it to SNL.
The portions about when he was actually on the show are the best. He could have probably made an entire book about THAT.
Instead, he glosses over a lot of what would seem to be a gold mine of behind the scenes information, then abruptly stops, and basically limps to the end.
I admit I didn't follow his career after SNL, so maybe it wasn't that interesting to HIM either.
I'm giving him a "C", and that's generous.
Not worth the money.
Sorry, David

Needs deeper explanations for a textbook
By RLC
I had to purchase this book for a class on business networks. The book does a horrible job of explaining the content, and it is almost universal in my class that students feel that way. There are two that feel it is fine, but they already work in the networking field and are just formalizing some education.

This is not to say it has worthless content, it just doesn't fully develop or explain a fair amount of the content, it stays very cursory.

That it has these types of issues and is in it's 9th edition speaks volumes about the college book market. The book cost $130 and should really sell for no more than $15.

Not a fan!
By cwalt03
If I could give this book ZERO stars, I would. This book is awful to read! It feels incomplete like the author expects that you're learning the information from somewhere else and they are just there to refresh your memory. One of the End-Of-Chapter Questions in Chapter 6 began with: "The following matters were not addressed specifically in the text." Who writes a book to teach and puts a question like that in the End-Of-Chapter "refresher" questions?! I got more of a "frustrated" feeling than a "refreshed" one.

I took this course (Data Communications) in Spring 2015 and the instructor asked the students to comment on the course and book. Here are some of the comments that were written about the book:
"...poorly written and not a very good learning tool. How exactly are you supposed to learn when the author talks to you as if you already know the topic?"
"...my impression of the book was suboptimal."

Got this book from Chegg for my semester
By Umme Bukhari
Pretty terrible at explaining anything network related. Only thing I really understood from it was the OSI model. Other than that moving onto networking with wireless, wans and lans it was all over the place explaining terms I couldn't even understand. Most of my class felt the same way because no one was doing well taking the exams for it. The figures to show how networking works were pretty much useless as I was pretty lost looking at these pictures.

From Library Journal
Horton, a founder of modern dance in the United States, died young and is probably best known through his students Joyce Trisler, James Truitte, Bella Lewitzky, and others. Horton's vision of dance was generally ahead of its time. He had one of the first racially integrated companies, established the first theater devoted exclusively to dance, choreographed dances dealing with social issues, and formulated a dance technique that has trained and inspired many. Reminiscences by former students and an exceedingly brief biography introduce the heart of the book, the Horton vocabulary. The authors, themselves students and teachers of the technique, provide detailed descriptions of each movement, complete with illustrative drawings and photographs, counts and meters, explanatory notes, and recommended student levels. The specificity of the volume will make it enthusiastically welcomed by modern dance practitioners. Recommended for specialized collections.

A must have textbook
By Demark Manigo
This book is extremely valuable to dancers everywhere and should be used as a textbook. My only wish is that it came with a dvd or more pictures to fully outline the lessons and positions a little better for those who are visual learners. Otherwise, an essential work on such a magnificent technique.

I was expecting something better...
By Powolny
I bought this book hoping to build an e-commerce app with the MEAN stack but after reading the book and building the website I can say that this is not an e-commerce app... The biggest error is that when creating a product it's not possible to attach an image to it, even the code provided by the author is not working...

It's not a beginner book! You have to have a minimum knowledge of the M.E.A.N. stack before reading this book, there are errors in the book and if you don't know the MEAN stack or if you don't have a good IDE you will be lost and frustrated.

Two positive points that I found in this book is to learn how to use ng-cart and login with social accounts.

PS:After more than one month I was able to contact the author about errors and about the image upload problem and he just created an issue on github and told me he will fix it, I'm still waiting....
