Fantastic For Studying For Med-Surg

*Note-This is the most current edition of this book (2015).
This book wasn't required for nursing school, but it is so helpful! It breaks chapters into sections such as "safety," "psychological support," "nursing process," and "caring across life span" with fantastic practice questions. The questions have rationale at the end for each answer. It also includes some photos, scales, and diagrams. A few of my professors recommended the book to supplement my med-surg textbook for studying, and now I wouldn't do without it!

When I do get ready to take the NCLEX, I'll have over 1,000 practice questions available online from an access code that comes with this book, which is a bonus!

A brief look into the mind of an almost human.

Lena Dunham's "Is it evil not be sure?" is a very quick dive into the psyche of her former self. The book, which is actually just her diary from the years 2005 and 2006, offers up poignant little insights into what her very specific life was like at age 19. Her first sexual experiences, the life of her grandmother as it ended, and the details of somewhat destructive relationship all play out one sentence at a time. We never get much specific information as to what is going on completely but, still, these little fragments of Dunham's life during this time offer up experiences that are universal. It's not a book that is going offer up an incredibly obvious cathartic explosion to the casual reader but there is still great deal of emotion there hidden deep in the words. We all grow up with these thoughts in our head. Some of us wrote them down. Lena's just sharing them.

I read this book during while getting a manicure. It was entertaining enough and the snippet entries reminded me of my own thoughts. I will say however, my manicurist was not thrilled with me risking my nails...she had a few words for me...

I'd like to see someone else do this task...this is so bad!

I do not agree with the one star reviews, although I understand their point. Dumbing down great poetry is a slippery slope, but I think it has it's place. They seem to be assuming that people are JUST going to read the "plain English" portion. No. The point is to read the real thing on the left and if you have trouble comprehending a particular section, you can read the right hand "plain English" side and then go back, read the real thing and learn how to read Milton's language. Very useful.

BUT I don't know what Lanzara was up to with his "reader's digest" version. That knocks this work down at least a peg or two. Far too many of the "plain English" verses are missing key information. He not only translated it from the old language to modern "plain English", but also left out a lot of the poem; imagery and information for some reason (laziness?). I wanted a simplified version to help with difficult passages, not a "reader's digest" version.

Just for a few examples, see passages 44, 60, and 73 in Book One. With 60 he turns ten lines into one! That's not translation, that's butchery.

But I'll still give it three stars because it still helps with the difficult passages, just not nearly as good as it could be if he took a little extra time to not eliminate so much of the poem.

UPDATE: I reconsidered; lowered to 2 stars. This is just plain laziness. Lines 550-559 in Book One. If the reason this got the "dumdown" award is because it's pathetically dumb, then I can get behind that.
Recommendation to the author: check out the "No Fear Shakespeare" series. That is exactly what is needed for Paradise Lost. A plain English version that isn't chopped to pieces and destroyed.

Check out page one of Book III (Chapter 3). It's a laugh riot! How did this get published? My guess is no one read it and didn't want to admit they couldn't read or understand this work very well so just gave it an award, while Lanzara laughed all the way to the bank!

Unsatisfactory as a "Translation" and as an Aid to Understanding the Poem

Translations in this volume are oversimplified and do not follow the original verse with sufficient rigour. I purchased this e-book hoping it would help illuminate some of the syntactically more challenging or serpentine passages. Unfortunately, it gives only blunt approximations of the text's meaning, boiling down lines and lines of imagery and detail to banal summary that I can only surmise most university readers could have guessed at on their own. As one of the previous reviewers mentioned, this volume ultimately does little in the way of actual translation. It bears a greater resemblance to a digest or a drawn-out synopsis. Did I mention it frequently mangles the tone of the poem with jarring uses of colloquial idioms? For example, it renders lines 539-46 in book 2 as: "Others let off steam by tearing up the rocks and hills."

Based on these remarks, my recommendation must be to avoid this work. Opt rather for /Paradise Lost in Plain and Simple English/ (Cap Books), which, while not perfect - indeed it gets several of the more difficult passages wrong - is at least an assistance to readers trying to make sense of Milton's difficult syntax and language. Buy Joseph Lanzara's version only if you want a quick, easy-to-read, condensed version of the plot of /Paradise Lost/ and are not interested in pursuing literary studies at a moderate or advanced reading level.

Lanzara's version, I suppose, might be good enough for undergraduate students who are too much pressed for time to actually read the poem and who find the recommended translation by Cap Books still too lengthy for them to get through.

Thoroughly enjoyed

I really enjoyed reading this book. I must say the English literal translation is not really that good though. It's just a summary of each verse but it DOES help in reinforcing if you read the prose.
I read the prose on the left and after read the summary translation on the right. It was very very beneficial. Milton's paradise lost is just a great. And surely only Smart people can read this book or anyone willing to read it.
If you decide to read just the summary on the right it will be good but you will miss on all the details and the juicy meat. So i advise to read both sides.

About the Author
Roger LeRoy Miller has served on the faculty of several respected universities, including the University of Washington, Clemson University, and the University of Miami School of Law. As a professor, he has taught intellectual property law and entertainment law, among other subjects. A widely published and respected author, his work has appeared in the Insurance Counsel Journal, Defense Research, California Trial Lawyers Journal, Antitrust Bulletin, Wisconsin Law Review, and Connecticut Law Review. He has authored or co-authored numerous authoritative textbooks on law, including BUSINESS LAW: TEXT & CASES; BUSINESS LAW TODAY: TEXT & SUMMARIZED CASES; and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT TODAY. Professor Miller completed his studies at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Chicago.

Frank B. Cross is the Herbert D. Kelleher Centennial Professor of Business Law at The University of Texas at Austin Law School, where his research centers on judicial decision-making, the economics of law and litigation, and traditional policy and doctrinal issues in administrative law. Good for Clep Exam

This book is all you need to pass the clep Exam. The book has a little bit of too much information than you actually need for the exam. There are 26 chapters in the book, but all you need to study is 20 chapters. You can select those chapters that u need to read by going to Cleps website ([...]) and look at the outline of the exam.

I took the exam recently and got a score of 70. I studied for one week 10 hours/day for the test. 80% of the questions were on contract and breach of contract. The rest were a mixture of questions. The test contained a lot of scenario questions pertaining mostly to contracts.

Remember to study the "terms" at the end of each chapter, study the "glossary" section and "You should remember" in each chapter and questions and answers in each chapter and you should be good to go.

Great study guide or primer

In addition to being an excellent resource for small business owners, this book is recommended as a preparation for the CLEP Business Law examination (3 lower-level college credits) by a number of people. I second that opinion, especially if you are looking to hit the higher percentiles.
This isn't a dry academic text, but an easy to read text that covers the basics with a minimum of handholding. Hardwicke presents the critical information that managers need to know, in a down to earth book.
Highly recommended for CLEP or DANTES candidates.

I bought this book to study for the CLEP Business Law I exam. I realized I could also use it for the Dantes Business Law II exam. I passed both, and am keeping it for a handy desk reference.

Finally A Book That Nails The Process Of Actually Defining and Profitably Developing Customer Experience For Your Business

There is so much good to say about this book. This is the rare book that you'll end up highlighting, sticky noting and filling notebooks with your ideas after reading it and then you'll promptly read it again. This is a hands on, get dirty kind of book, if you use it for more than intellectual entertainment you'll be busy for quite a while building a model that works. But, if you take the time to actually do the work, implement the findings and look at the feedback, you'll take your business to the next level. X is the one book I'll give to all my clients this year and that will be part of their required work with me.

So if it is so great, what only four stars? I'll get to that.

What I think X does best is connect experience and brand. We've all known for a long time that a brand is simply a collection of experiences that people have with a product or service that they can bring to mind but few are able to adequately make that connection intentional. This book is the roadmap to becoming the brand of choice, the brand of conversation, the brand of sharing, the brand people buy. It doesn't matter if you are a service company, a product company, brick and mortar or online, the principles all apply.

Throughout the book you'll find many roadmaps that require you to actually do some work to come to the right conclusions for your business but you will if you do the work. The book is also full of well articulated case studies that show the outcome of the work for other companies, you'll find many you can relate to. The book also does a great job of showing you how to anticipate your customers wants and needs and get ahead of the curve in delivering experiences they desire but also experiences they don't even know they want yet and that is the competitive advantage this book gives.

The book is composed of 25 sections. It begins with What Is X and continues through Design, Persona, Storytelling and finishes with section 9.0, This is water - You'll have experienced the journey fully to finally understanding what is meant by the idea of customer experience but more importantly you'll know how to create them for your clients.

The section called The Grid will be of particular importance and may be one of the most profitable pieces of the book. In this section you'll develop a customer map where every ever leads to excellence at every connection. This is where designing your experience starts. The next very important segment of the book is journey mapping, it outlines the journey that your client takes throughout their lifetime with your company. We've often explored the idea of lifetime value of a customer but rarely do we explore what the journey looks like for the customer and where along the journey we can delight and surpass their expectations with experience.

Now here is the hard part and where the book fails and I'm not blaming the author for this at all, but it is the experience of reading the book itself. The book is full color, printed on heavy stock and that is the problem. As you are reading the book you'll come across pages that have a very dark background making them very hard to read in all but the best of light. And, if you want to use this as an actual working book, you'll have to add sticky notes to the book because on many pages you can't make notes in the margin because of the page color. This seems to be an emerging trend with a lot of books but if I can't easily read it and easily highlight it, it loses a star. For a book all about experience, the experience this one delivers is not quite there but that is completely trumped by the information inside. It is worth the aggravation to get the good stuff.

This book has the possibility of helping you create dramatic change in your business, change that will lead to raving fans and profitability. It isn't a fast read and it will take work but it is your roadmap to exceptional customer experiences.

This is a must read for every business owner, customer service team and CEO.

This is not a book to read but a book to look at

Digital Design, Journey Maps, Experiences, Touch Points and Personas form a new language of experience design. The terminology, examples and connections across these ideas can be confusing, particularly for people used to creating technology and solutions in the prior model. This book provides a highly stylized but still effective overview of the design deliverables and process. However, the book is surprisingly less usable than one that is designed. The Format gets in the way of thus highly stylized coffee table style book on digital design

This book is in a long line of works that try to be graphically stunning -- showing off designer skills. while still conveying important information. The design too often overwhelms the content, making it less accessible and valuable to the reader. This is a paradox that a book about design could be designed in such a way as to make it less usable.

The basic point of the book is that experience increasingly determines who wins and loses in the digital economy. Its a concept that is well established by a number of other books. Solis goes one step further in showing you the elements of designing and developing experiences which is a real plus. But the book is rather unusable as its difficult to annotate -- given the dark pages. Its also difficult to read as the text is in different places on different pages. This is not a book you read -- its a book you look at, which is a shame because that can easily trivialize the content I am sure it will win print design awards, but print designers are not the 'users' or audience of this information -- not designing for the customer means its not designed.

The result is a book that you want to use and share with others, but the format gets in the way -- hence the three star rating.

About the Author

DON TAPSCOTT is the CEO of the Tapscott Group and one of the most influential living theorists about business and society. Mostly harmless

An interesting read, but for the most part a harried chronicling of people and trends (mostly people) in a hyper dynamic space. A lot of Nobel laureate name dropping (to which, to their credit, they admit!). Has the feel of someone trying to get a book out there to take advantage of the thirst for new insight. Some good brain candy.

Would have expected a better "primer" on how block chain actually works. Given the audience this tome appears aimed at, a few paragraphs ("How this worldwide ledger works") seems a bit under-serving - particularly for such an avowedly history-changing paradigm. Readers must understand this thing before trusting it, which for the most part is mysterious and geeky. Demystification would help move blockchain out of the comfort zone of PhD's into the realm of the mere unwashed (in which this reviewer sits). And nothing on the mystery surrounding Satoshi himself - what's up with that? Given that we're dealing with a new trust paradigm, doesn't the fact of his anonymity (existence?) not at least merit some comment?

Only part I would recommend is found at Chapter 10 "Showstopper issues"... Ironic, of course but best analysis is here!

Explains the possibilities.

Excellent, clear & concise. I found this a great discussion about the possibilities of Blockchain. It covers present applications, and then takes the reader beyond the now into the realm of possibility! All the while based in realism, some ideas may flourish, some may fail. I recommend it to anyone wanting a foundational understanding of Blockchain.

The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people

The most interesting, groundbreaking book I have read in years. This has got to be one of, if not the most, authorititive books out there on the blockchain. It does not focus on technical matters and can be read by a lay person not very familiar with how blockchain technology and cryptography work. Nor is it simply about Bitcoin (blockchains are about much more than Bitcoin). Less about how it works, than about how blockchain technology has the potential to transform the spheres of commerce, finance, management, public administration, politics, government and society in general (not to mention other applications). Must surely be compulsary reading for anyone wishing to explore how to create and exchange value, devise new business models and futureproofing in this age of information and big data. It is not however a book targeted only at e-commerce of financial services people. The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people, particularly those in developing countries who are currently excluded from the financial system and the formal economy. They remind us of course that as with any other technology the blockchain is 'neutral', in that it is not inherently a 'good' or a 'bad' thing; it depends on how people choose to deploy it.

The authors' intention in all previous editions of Operational Amplifiers and Linear Integrated Circuits has been to show that operational amplifiers and other linear integrated circuits are easy to use and fun to work with. This sixth edition has kept that basic philosophy. For the fundamental circuits, we have continued to use devices that are readily available, easy to use, and forgiving if a wiring error is made. Newer devices are introduced where the application requires it. We have preserved our original objective of simplifying the process of learning about applications involving signal conditioning, signal generation, filters, instrumentation, timing, and control circuits. This edition continues to reflect the evolution of analog circuits into applications requiring transducer signals that must be conditioned for a microcontroller's analog-to-digital input. We have kept circuit simulation using OrCAD® PSpice®. A laboratory manual is now available to accompany this sixth edition. It includes both detailed hardware and simulation exercises. Some exercises are step-by-step; others are design projects. The exercises follow the text material.

Chapters 1 through 6 provide the reader with a logical progression from op amp fundamentals to a variety of practical applications without having to worry about op amp limitations. Chapter 7 shows how op amps combined with diodes can be used to design ideal rectifier circuits as well as clamping and clipping circuits. PSpice models and simulations are included in these chapters.

Chapter 8 shows applications that require measuring a physical variable such as temperature, force, pressure, or weight and then having the signal conditioned by an instrumentation amplifier before being input into a microcontroller's A/D converter. Instrumentation amplifiers are required when a designer has to measure a differential signal, especially in the presence of a larger noise signal.

As previously mentioned, in order not to obscure the inherent simplicity and overwhelming advantages of using op amps, their limitations have been left for Chapters 9 and 10. Dc limitations are studied in Chapter 9 and ac limitations are covered in Chapter 10. An expanded discussion on common-mode rejection ratio has been included in this edition. Many limitations have been made negligible by the latest generations of op amps, as pointed out in these chapters.

Active filters, low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-reject, are covered in Chapter 11. Butterworth-type filters were selected because they are easy to design and produce a maximally flat response in the pass band. Chapter 11 shows the reader how to design a variety of filters easily and quickly.

Chapter 12 introduces a linear integrated circuit known as the multiplier. The device makes analysis and design of AM communication circuits simpler than using discrete components. Modulators, demodulators, frequency shifters, a universal AM radio receiver, and analog divider circuits all use a multiplier IC as the system's basic building block. This chapter has been retained because instructors have written to say that the principles of single-side band suppressed carrier and standard amplitude-modulation transmission and detection are clearly explained and quite useful for their courses.

The inexpensive 555 IC timer is covered in Chapter 13. This chapter shows the basic operation of the device as well as many practical applications. The chapter also includes a timer/counter unit.

In previous editions, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters have been covered in a single chapter. This edition separates these topics into two chapters so that more device specifications can be included as well as practical applications. Chapter -14 deals only with analog-to-digital converters, while the new Chapter 15 covers digital-to-analog converters. A serial ADC connected to a Motorola microprocessor is shown (with assembly language code) in Chapter 14.

Chapter 16 shows how to design a regulated linear power supply. This chapter begins with the fundamentals of unregulated supplies and proceeds to regulated supplies. It shows how IC regulators are used for building low-cost 5 V and ± 15 V bench supplies.

This edition has more than enough material for a single-semester course. After the first three chapters, instructors often take chapters out of sequence depending on the class interest, need to complement another course (such as a design course), or availability of lab equipment or class time. Therefore, Chapters 4 through 16 have been written as standalone chapters for this very reason. The circuits have been tested in the laboratory by the authors and the material is presented in a form useful to students or as a reference to practicing engineers and technologists. Each chapter includes learning objectives and problems, and most chapters have PSpice simulations. The reader should refer to the accompanying laboratory manual for lab exercises and additional simulation exercises.

I received "Operational Amplifiers and Linear Integrated Circuits" by Robert F. Coughlin & Frederick F. Driscoll. The book came as used but in top condition. The description reported looked brand new before I bought it.
However the description on Amazons page also reported that this was hard cover and I received a paper back edition.
I am satisfied, this book will still have what I need for the course work.
